Abstract

 FLOW CYTOMETRY ENABLES RAPID ANALYSIS OF MULTIPLE CHARACTERISTICS OF A LARGE NUMBER OF SINGLE CELLS IN A FLUID STREAMFOLLOWING ILLUMINATION WITH A LASER BEAM. CHARACTERISTICS THAT CAN BE STUDIED INCLUDE CELL SIZE, CYTOPLASMIC COMPLEXITY, DNA OR RNA CONTENT, AND A WIDE RANGE OF MEMBRANE-BOUND AND INTRACELLULAR PROTEINS. FLOW CYTOMETRY WAS FIRST INTRODUCED AS A RESEARCH TOOL MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO; HOWEVER RECENT ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR CLINICAL LABORATORIES TO EMPLOY THIS METHODOLOGY….
