INVESTIGATING THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS ORGANIC SUBSTRATES ON MTBE BIODEGRADATION AND ISOLATING A NEW STRAIN CAPABLE OF DEGRADING MTBE

Abstract

 SUPPLEMENTS WITH READILY METABOLIZABLE ORGANIC SUBSTRATES WERE INVESTIGATED TO INCREASE THE BIOMASS AND ENHANCE DEGRADATION OF METHYL TERT-BUTYL ETHER (MTBE) DUE TO THE LOW BIOMASS YIELD OF MTBE WHICH HAS BEEN ONE OF THE FACTORS FOR LOW-RATE MTBE DEGRADATION. THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS ORGANIC SUBSTRATES ON THE RATE OF AEROBIC DEGRADATION OF METHYL TERT-BUTYL ETHER (MTBE) BY CONSORTIUM DERIVED FROM THREE CONTAMINATED SAMPLES WAS INVESTIGATED AND ONLY YEAST EXTRACT (YE) AND BTEX (BENZENE, TOLUENE, ETHYL BENZENE AND P-XYLENE) EXHIBITED STIMULATORY EFFECT. THEN, FOUR PURE BACTERIAL CULTURES DEGRADING MTBE WERE ISOLATED FROM THE CONSORTIUM HAS GROWN IN THE PRESENCE OF MTBE AND BTEX. ONE ISOLATE COULD EFFECTIVELY GROW AND DEGRADE 85% OF 300 MG/L MTBE IN THE PRESENCE OF 100 MG/L BTEX DURING 10 DAYS. THIS ISOLATE IDENTIFIED AS MICROCOCCUS YUNNANENSIS YIM, A NEW STRAIN CAPABLE OF DEGRADING MTBE.
