 DEVELOPMENT OF CONTROLLED/ LIVING RADICAL POLYMERIZATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PROGRESS IN THE POLYMER CHEMISTRY TO SYNTHESIZE POLYMERS WITH THE CONTROLLED MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND STRUCTURE AS WELL AS NARROWER MOLECULAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION. AMONG THE THREE KINDS OF CONTROLLED/ LIVING RADICAL POLYMERIZATIONS, ATOM TRANSFER RADICAL POLYMERIZATION IS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL METHODS FOR POLYMERIZATION OF STYRENES, METHACRYLATE’S, ACRYLATES AND OTHER MONOMERS WITH THE CONTROLLED FASHION. THE KINETICS OF ATOM TRANSFER RADICAL POLYMERIZATION (ATRP) OF STYRENE USING BIS-(2-DODECYLSULFANYL-ETHYL)-AMINE COPPER BROMIDE WAS INVESTIGATED. THE CONCENTRATION OF THE COPPER CATALYST DOES NOT AFFECT THE PROPAGATION RATE BUT AFFECT THE TERMINATION PROCESS OF POLYMERIZATION APPRECIABLY. BY INCREASING THE REACTION TEMPERATURE THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION OF THE PRODUCED POLYSTYRENE BECOME MORE NARROW. THE DEPENDENCE OF THE POLYMERIZATION RATE TO SOLVENT AND TEMPERATURE, MONOMER/INITIATOR RATIO AND CATALYST/ LIGAND WERE PRESENTED. PLOTS OF LN ([M]0/[M]T) VS. TIME AND MOLECULAR WEIGHT VS. CONVERSION SHOWED A LINEAR DEPENDENCE, INDICATING A CONSTANT NUMBER OF PROPAGATING SPECIES THROUGHOUT THE POLYMERIZATION AS WELL AS A NEGLIGIBLE CONTRIBUTION OF TERMINATION OR TRANSFER REACTIONS.
