EVALUA TION OF EYE EFFECTS & INJURIES FROM ECLIPSE IN ISFAHAN, AUGUST 1999

Abstract

 In this prospective study, we evaluate patients that suffered from eye effects & injuries due to observing the ECLIPSE over isfahan in August 1999.609 patients with suspected eye complications following observing ECLIPSE referred to Feiz Eye Hospital. All patients were examined 5 times (1 week, 1 month, 3 months & 6 months after ECLIPSE) and their complications & eye findings recorded in special chart.The most frequent age group was 16-40 years old (73.5%). 215 patients (35.2%) had used eye protective devices. 495 patients (81.28%) had symptoms such as itching, tearing and photophobia, reduce vision was detected in 42, visual scotoma in five and matamorphopsia in two patients. External symptoms resolved in 1 week to 1 month after ECLIPSE.37 patients of reduced vision cases improved to 20/20 during 6 months after ECLIPSE & remaining 5 patients had 20 reduced vision 1-3 lines of snellen chart.These patients had not used protective devices and watching ECLIPSE relatively long time.Funduscopic examination revealed MACULAR BURN in 54 patients that their flurescein angiography was normal, in all of whome this finding had no significant effect on their visual acuity.According to the results of this study eye effects and injuries from ECLIPSE watching is not frequent and most of the cases will improve within several weeks
