Abstract:

Many books have been written to illustrate the position of the new technologies in teaching and learning a foreign or second language (L2); nonetheless, most of these books have not been successful. The Handbook of Technology and second Language Teaching and Learning edited by Caral A. Chapell and Shanon Sauro and published by Wiley Blackwell in 2017, provides a comprehensive overview of the various facets of the use of technology in teaching and learning an L2. This book has not been translated into Persian and no critical review has been published for it; accordingly, this study sought to both introduce and critically review this book. The current critical review revealed some advantages including comprehensiveness of the whole book, the expertise of the writers, up-to-dateness, content and format integrity, and the use of valid sources. The main criticisms are the exclusion of some of the very recent technologies, perhaps due to the ever-changing and exponentially volatile nature of the technological improvements and expansions, the introduction of too many technologies at the theoretical level without providing information about their practical use. Generally, the book is an invaluable and academically written source for L2 practitioners, postgraduate students, and researchers.

Abstract:

It is quite common in ELT to encounter positions which equate SLA with SCA. However, it is believed that a prerequisite to resolving this basic diversity is the demystification of a set of dominant misconceptions concerning language, culture and speech community. Highlighting a number of dominant misunderstandings in this relation, the present article questions the validity of SLA/SCA parallelism.

Abstract:

It is ten years since the Iranian Journal of Physics Research has been in publication. For the Occasion of the 10th anniversary of its publication, we have planned several changes and modifications. These includes increasing the annual issues to four and omission of 'Introduction of Previously-Published Papers in International Journals' section. In this article some statistical information of the published articles is given together with the index of the journal's referees. As weenter the second decade of our publication, we face several questions. In this article we share these questions with our readers in the hope of finding the best possible solutions, so that we would be able to publish a better journal in future.

Abstract:

Excavations in Tepe Barveh were conducted with the aim to shed further light on the period of painted Bronze Age wares and to refine the existing chronology for the Lesser Zab Basin in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC. Thanks to its location in the upper valley of the Lesser Zab, the Barveh region served as a natural pathway for interaction between the Zagros foothills zones with the Rania and Peshdar Plain in Sulaimaniyah province in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the southern basin of Lake Urmia. By its overlapping Bronze Age sequence, the site offers a strong potential to fill the existing gap of information for the Early Bronze Age occupation in northwestern Iran. A foremost purpose of this paper is to situate Barveh within northwestern Iran, and to explore intra- and inter-regional interactions. The stratified occurrence of Painted Orange Ware (POW) is helpful to establish a sequence for the region and to fill the existing lacuna. EBA sites in northwestern Iran beyond the Kura Araxes zone remain understudied, and few sites offer deposits of considerable depth. The Early Bronze Age is generally associated with the burnished black pottery, while the orange pottery, a coeval and equally important cultural hallmark, has attracted less attention and remains a little known tradition. Hence, in light of the material culture excavated at Barveh, this paper seeks to gain an insight into the ways in which Tepe Barveh interacted with other regions dominated by the orange pottery culture. The ca. 8-meter deep EBA deposit at Barveh built up over c. 300 years and represents this period of POW in an uninterrupted sequence, attesting to cultural continuity over an extended period of time. The culture shows parallels with EBA sites in the southern Urmia Lake Basin and in the Rania and Peshdar plains in Iraqi Kurdistan

Abstract:

The second trimester scan is the most important sonographic evaluation during pregnancy. The second trimester ultrasound examination is not only for confirming gestational age but also it provides an ideal opportunity for assessing fetal anatomy and therefore structural normality. In addition, assessment of placental position and morphology, amniotic fluid volume, number of fetuses, evaluation of soft markers for chromosomal defects and the comparative interpretation of various measurements are all important pointers to potential problems. This examination is commonly referred to as a „routine second trimester anomaly scan‟. The optimal time at which to offer the routine anomaly scan is the earliest gestation at which the necessary measurements and a full fetal anatomy survey can be performed and the latest gestation at which an acceptable range of options can be offered to the parents if an abnormality is detected. Although the measurements required to date the pregnancy accurately can be taken after 15 weeks of gestation, and most of the fetal anatomy can be evaluated at 18–20 weeks, the optimal time for examination of fetal heart can be provided at 23-28 weeks. It is recommend that the routine anomaly scan is performed between 20 and 24 weeks but we recommend anomaly scan to be done before 20 weeks (18-20 weeks) in Iran as we have limitation for legal termination if needed. Although it is necessary to examine the entire fetus and other uterine contents in detail, it is not always feasible to do this in the order suggested. It is suggested that the measurements are always carried out early in the examination so that they are not forgotten. It is not reasonable to expect all structural fetal abnormalities amenable to ultrasound detection to be diagnosed at a routine second trimester anomaly scan. Though if the approach is systematic then no major structural abnormality should be missed. However there are several examples from anomalies such as microcephaly which might be missed in second trimester scan if there is no serial examination. In the majority of normal pregnancies, measurement of the biparietal diameter (BPD) and femur length (FL) provide the most accurate assessment of gestational age in the second trimester. It is recommended that measurements of the head circumference (HC), transcerebellar diameter (TCD) and abdominal circumference (AC) are also undertaken. They provide further confirmation of gestational age and aid in the exclusion of growth related abnormalities and spina bifida. In addition, their inclusion encourages a systematic examination of the whole fetus. An ultrasound examination is in the unique position of being both a screening test and a diagnostic test for fetal anomalies. Its clinical value is directly dependent on the skills of the sonographer, first, in obtaining the correct images for evaluation and measurement and, second, in the correct interpretation in each specific and unique clinical situation. Such examinations must only be performed by individuals who have undergone a supervised period of training that enables them to identify and distinguish between the range of normal findings, findings of uncertain significance and abnormalities at varying stages of gestation.

Abstract:

Introduction: The mandibular and maxillary third molars are one of the most prevalent impacted teeth. Third molars grow last and it is probable that they face space insufficiency which leads to their impaction. Impacted third molar should be removed from oral cavity surgically due to various side effects which are periodontal problems of second molar and the possibility of root resorption, tumors and cysts, weakness of mandible bone, idiopathic pains. Hence, they should be surgically removed which diminishes further risks. However, the operation may lead to periodontal problems of adjacent second molar tooth and periodontal pocket. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of maxillary third molar removal on the periodontal condition of second molar. Materials and Methods: 30 patients who were undergoing oral surgery (Third molar extraction) in the Clinic of Dentistry, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (Iran) in age group of 22 to 26 years enrolled in this study. Pocket depth, attachment loss, plaque index, bleeding on probing were evaluated in middistal, distobuccal, and distolingual sides of second molars pre and 6 months post operation. Results: The pocket depth (P=0. 187) and attachment loss (P=0. 532) were insignificantly increased in two times (pre operation and 6 months post operation). Plaque (P<0. 001), gingival index (P=0. 006), and bleeding on probing (P=0. 008) were significantly decreased in during time (plaque index=P<0. 001). Conclusion: The results indicated that maxillary third molar operation does not negatively affect the periodontal tissues of second molar and this operation does not have any effect on life teeth.

Abstract:

Let R be a commutative ring with identity, S be a mul-tiplicatively closed subset of R, and let M be an R-module. In this paper, we introduce and investigate some properties of the notion of S-2-absorbing second submodules of M as a generalization of S-second submodules and strongly 2-absorbing second submodules of M. Also, we obtain some results concerning S-2-absorbing submodules of M.
