Abstract:

Evaluating the cutting rate (CR) of stones is important in the cost estimation and the planning of the stone processing plants. This research used regression models to estimate the stones’ CR based on their PHYSICO-mechanical characteristics. Stone processing factories in Mahallat City (Markazi province, Iran) were visited, and the CR of diamond circular saws was recorded on six different travertine stones. Next, the stone block samples were collected from the quarries for laboratory tests. Stones’ porosity (n), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and Schmidt hammer hardness (SH) were determined in the laboratory as their PHYSICO-mechanical characteristics. Correlation relationships of CR with PHYSICO-mechanical characteristics were evaluated using simple and multiple regression analyses, and estimator models were developed. Results showed that multiple regression models are more reliable than simple regression for estimating the stones’ CR. The validity of the developed multiple regression models was verified with the published data of one researcher. The findings indicated that these models are accurate enough for estimating the CR of stones. Consequently, the multiple regression models provide practical advantages for estimating the CR and save time and cost during the planning and design of the stone processing factories.

Background: Rice is one of the most important agricultural products and main food for more than %25 people in the world. Due to increasing consumption of this product, evaluation of quality and characteristics of cultivated rice in different regions of country is of great importance. Additionally, over the past decades, heavy metals contamination in rice cause to be public concern, thus assessment of heavy metal pollution of rice is necessary. Evaluation the characteristics of rice varieties will allow consumers and producers to prepare rice according to their taste and need. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the amount of lead and cadmium, PHYSICOchemical properties and cooking quality of champa rice in different regions of Baghmalek, Khuzestan.Materials and Methods: In this study, rice cultivated in different regions of Baghmalek was sampled in three replications and transferred to the laboratory for testing. PHYSICOchemical tests including protein, moisture content, ash, total solid, amylose content and thousand grain weight were evaluated based on national standard of Iran. Cadmium and lead content of rice cultivated in different region of Baghmalek were evaluated. Cooking properties of studied rice including cooking time, water absorption, leakage, gelatinization grade and Elongation of rice were evaluated. The tests were performed in a completely randomized design with SAS software and analyzed by Duncan test at a probability level of 5%.Results: The results of proximate test including (carbohydrate, protein, total solid, ash and moisture) showed that significant difference was between samples cultivated in different region of Baghmalek. In all samples, except for one samples, amylose content were 20-21%. The results of heavy metal evaluation indicated Cd in all samples were in permissible limit but lead content in imported rice and cultivated rice in Sidon and Meydavoud was more than permissible limit. Studied samples with regard to lenght were in medium category and Elongation of rice was in the range of 1.39-1.74. The gelatinization grade of studied samples was in the range of 3.25-4.17. Evaluation of cooking properties including cooking time, water absorption and leakage indicated it was significant difference between studied samples. Thousand grain weight of studied samples had been significant difference and was in the range of 13.07-18.86.Conclusion: In general, selected rice samples from different regions of Baghmalek exhibited a significant difference in PHYSICOchemical properties. With regard to cooking properties and quality, rice samples had desirable status and were comparable to imported rice. Evaluation of the safety status of studied rice samples suggests that control of cultivated regions is necessary.

Abstract:

This article reports the effects of gamma irradiation (dose ranges 0.1–10 kGy from 60Co source) on the characteristics of solid gelatin and the PHYSICO-mechanical, microstructural and bioactive properties of the scaffold prepared from irradiated gelatin solution. FTIR, intrinsic viscosity, bloom strength, thermal properties, SEM, tensile properties, water uptake ability and antimicrobial activities of non-irradiated and irradiated solid gelatin and its scaffolds were investigated. The detailed experimental results for the solid gelatin demonstrated that 1 kGy g-irradiated samples showed higher intrinsic viscosity, enhanced thermal stability and bloom strength than other irradiated samples. Furthermore, the scaffold thus prepared from irradiated and non-irradiated gelatin also revealed that 1 kGy samples showed the highest tensile strength and modulus with good water resistivity than other irradiated and non-irradiated samples. In addition to the PHYSICOmechanical properties, 1 kGy scaffolds have also exhibited the highest resistivity towards microbial growth that can have potentiality as scaffold in biomedical sector. The enhanced functional and bioactive properties at low irradiation doses (1 kGy) may occurred due to an initial breaking of hydrogen bonds of polypeptide chains in gelatin molecules that indicated by the shift of amide A, I and II peaks to higher wave numbers in FTIR. This enhancement resulted probably due to the domination of crosslinking over degradation at 1 kGy. It was also observed that 1 kGy g-radiation-induced crosslinking has lowered the hydrophilicity by decreasing water uptake and mean pore diameter of the interconnected porous structures of gelatin.

Abstract:

Low transmission of heat is one of the major problems for heat exchanger fluids in many industrial and scientific applications. This includes cooling of the engines, high power transformers to heat exchangers in solar hot water panels or in refrigeration systems. In order to tackle these problems in thermal industries, nanofluids could play a significant role as excellent heat exchanger materials for thermal applications. Silver nanofluids can be used abundantly for thermal applications due to their low cost and high thermal conductivity. The present article describes the green synthesis of the silver nanoparticles from AgNO3 powder using some plant product like tannic acid. The silver nanoparticles are characterized by XRD, UV-visible spectrophotometer, TEM. The silver nanofluids of different concentrations are prepared by means of water as the base fluid. The ultrasonic velocity is calculated for different concentration at room temperature. Acoustical parameters like compressibility, intermolecular free length and acoustic impedance are calculated using ultrasonic velocity, density and viscosity and the results are discussed in terms of intermolecular interactions between the nanoparticles and the base fluid. The variation of ultrasonic velocity and other calculated acoustic parameters are used to analyze in amplification of heat conductivity of silver nanofluids.
