Abstract:

Objective Pharmacological treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is based on the use of at least two antibiotics with a double dose of proton pump inhibitor which results in antibiotic resistance. Anti-helicobacterial activity of sulforaphane-rich broccoli has been evaluated in laboratory studies. This study aimed to systematically review the conducted randomized clinical trials that have examined the effect of broccoli on H. pylori in humans. Methods This study is a systematic review of randomized clinical trials on the effect of broccoli on H. pylori. The search was conducted in PubMed, OVID, Web of Science, and Scopus databases using the keywords: Helicobacter pylori, broccoli sprouts, H. pylori, randomized clinical trials, and Brassica, without any time limits for studies conducted until 2019. After excluding duplicates, the titles and abstracts of remained articles were evaluated by two researchers and then the related ones were extracted. Next, their full-texts were examined to select the final articles for review. We included clinical trials and excluded those were in the laboratory or animal testing phases or their full-texts were unavailable. Results Three studies that had met the inclusion criteria were considered for the review. Overall, neither in the articles that reviewed in the present study nor in the articles that did not enter the review process due to unavailability of their full-texts or having a very small sample size, no clear positive effect of broccoli on inhibiting H. pylori infection in humans had been reported. Conclusion Due to the lack of optimal results from broccoli consumption for the control of H. pylori infection in humans, it is recommended that longer studies with sufficient sample size and appropriate dose of broccoli along with standard treatment be performed in the future...

Abstract:

Sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, it is an antioxidant and anti-cancer agent, and reduces blood pressure, and also has anti-allergic Effects. In this article, six theoretical methods have been used for calculation of physical parameters in solforaphane and several similar compounds. We calculated physical parameters like atomic charges, energy (DE), chemical shift anisotropy (d), asymmetry parameter (h), chemical shift anisotropy (Ds), dipole moment, isotropic, anisotropic, NMR determinant and distance matrix determinant, and in this work we used Gaussian 98 at NMR and natural bond orbital (NBO) calculation by using HF method with 6-31G, 6-31G* and 6-31+G basis set and B3LYP, BLYP and B3PW91 methods with 6-31G basis set. The GIAO magnetic shielding for studied molecules was obtained by using Gauss view program. Chemical shift curve was drawn for all of the atoms in each molecular.

Abstract:

Introduction: Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient for the plant affecting many physiological functions in plants. Phosphite (PO33; Phi; valence of +3), a reduced form of phosphate (PO43; Pi; valence of +5), that are being widely marketed either as an agricultural fungicide or as a superior source of plant phosphorus (P) nutrition. Furthermore, pH of both nutrient and soil solution alter the availability of P by the plants. There is insufficient information concerning the use of phosphite in plant. It could be possible to use of phosphite and phosphate to improve the P nutrition of plants. Materials and Methods: An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of phosphite and phosphate in different pH on yield, growth and P status in broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italicacv. Fiorentino). The experiment was conducted with three pH levels (5. 5, 7, 8. 5) factorially combined with three P source levels (Pi, Phi and Pi& Phi). The plants were grown in black buckets containing 8 L of aerated nutrient solution for 10 weeks. At the end of experiments the plant were harvested to measure the agronomical and physiological characteristics. The concentration of P was measured in the recently matured expanded leaves. Results and Discussion: Results indicated that the growth of broccoli plants was affected by the form of P. Phosphite significantly reduced the yield of plant. In Phosphite treated plants immature heads (button-like flower heads) was observed. Likewise, Phosphite increased phosphorus and potassium concentration in the leaves, roots, Stems and heads. Both P and K concentration were significantly reduced by the increase pH level. The highest yield was observed in Pi& Phi with pH (5. 5) at 237 g plant-1. Phosphate (pH=5. 5) compare to Phosphite (pH=5. 5) increased by 75% in yield. The increase in Pi uptake in the Phi treatment plant caused increased in P concentration in leaves and growth reduction and phytotoxicity. The negative effects application of only Phosphite was strong inhibiting effect in fresh weight head. Despit of increased P concentration in Phosphite treated plant, it seems that P from Phosphite source has no effect on P functional in plants. Conclusion: The findings this experiment indicted that Phosphite alone could not be used as a phosphorus fertilizer for the plants. however, the combination of Phosphite and phosphate improves the growth of broccoli plants.

Abstract:

The study was conducted in Polashi, Manirampur Upazila, Jashore, Bangladesh, during Rabi seasons of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 to evaluate the effects of organic nutrient sources on yield and shelf life of broccoli. The experimental layout was a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and six treatments which were: T1= Vermicompost 3 t ha-1, T2 = Vermicompost 4 t ha-1, T3 = Trichocompost 3 t ha-1, T4 = Trichocompost 4 t ha-1, T5 = FYM 12 t ha-1, T6 = (control). A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was designed to determine the shelf life of broccoli with three replications, considering three factors, (i) the effects of organic sources of nutrient, (ii) storage materials at room temperature and (iii) storage materials at cold storage condition. The findings revealed that the effects of organic nutrient sources significantly influenced the yield and shelf life of broccoli. The treatment T2 (vermicompost 4 t ha-1) produced significant (p≤0.05) amounts of marketable curd yield of broccoli (22.33 t ha-1 and 21.27 t ha-1), followed by T4 (Trichocompost  4 t ha-1) with marketable curd yield (19.76 t ha-1, 18.78 t ha-1). In contrast, the minimum marketable curd yield (7.76 t ha-1 and 7.29 t ha-1) occurred in T6 (control) in the respective years. The treatment of T2 led to the highest shelf life (7.33 and 7.55 days) at room temperature (14-220C with RH 60-65%). At cold storage (40C with RH 90-95%), using High-Density Polyethylene (HDP;15 micron) vacuum pack, the shelf life was also significant (24.75 & 25.19 days) during the years of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, respectively.

Abstract:

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. cv Premium crop) florets were packaged using two types of polymeric films (polyethylene, LD & polypropylene -cast)and then stored at 1°C for 18 days to study the effect of passive and active MAP (1.5%02+7.5%CO2) on preservation of quality and nutritional value as compared to non-wrapped control florets. During storage, weight loss, rate of ethylene production, quality, fermentation products, vitamin C, chlorophyll, pH and titrable acidity were assessed and estimated every 3 days. Results revealed that deterioration occurred quickly in control broccoli, manifested mainly by weight loss, firmness reduction, and chlorophyll degradation and yellowing. Conversely, in those florets packaged under MAP (especially for polypropylene), ethylene production as well as all other changes related with loss 9f quality was significantly reduced. This situation prolonged storability up to 18 days with high quality attributes as well as vitamin C preservation. At the end of the storage period, broccoli gradually developed slight to moderate alcoholic off-odors accumulating ethanol, and acetaldehyde in the tissues.
