Abstract

In order to determine the effectiveness of selective herbicides for sugar beet and the best application time of them in transplanting sugar beet system, an experiment was conducted in two  regions of Kermanshah and Mashhad in 2019 in randomized complete block design with 11 treatments and four replications. Experimental treatments included application of trifluralin at pre-transplanting, two and four leaf stages, phenmedipham+ desmedipham+ ethofumesat  at four leaf stage, chloridazon  after transplanting and before first irrigation at 2-4 leaf stage, cycloate before transplanting, cycloate and trifluralin before transplanting, metamitron immediately after transplanting, metamitron + phenmedipham after transplanting and at four leaf stage, and hand weeding.  Results showed that application of metamitron (3 l ha-1 immediately after transplanting) and metamitron + phenmedipham (3+1.5 l ha-1 immediately after transplanting and at 4-leaf stage) could control more than 85% of weeds (90 and 88% in Kermanshah and 62 and 83% in Mashhad, respectively). The highest root yield of 84 t ha-1 for Kermanshah and 64 t ha-1 for Mashhad was obtained from metamitron (3 l ha-1 immediately after transplanting) and metamitron + phenmedipham (3+1.5 l ha-1 immediately after transplanting and at 4-leaf stage) treatments and for this reason, the use of these herbicides is recommended for optimal control of weeds in sugar beet planting.
