PEER COACHING TO BOOST UP TEACHER EFFICACY AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: A CASE STUDY IN TEACHER EDUCATION

Abstract

 The use of effective PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT strategies to improve teacher quality and educational practices of teaching has become a critical aspect of school improvement across the world. One effective strategy for improving the quality of teaching and learning is PEER COACHING. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of PEER COACHING on the PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT of teachers while assessing TEACHER EFFICACY resulting from PEER COACHING and attitudes of the participants toward the approach as compared to those of conventional supervision model in in- service TEFL TEACHER EDUCATION in Iran. For the purpose of this study a pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The participants were the English teachers of one school in Tehran (n=20). They were randomly assigned into two groups, to one of which the PEER COACHING program was administered and to the other the conventional program, that is, FACULTY SUPERVISION. Then, they were compared in regard to their (a) self-efficacy, and (b) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. To measure TEACHER EFFICACY, the Ohio State TEACHER EFFICACY Scale (OSTES) was used, and to measure teacher's PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, Metcalf's Instructional Skills were mainly taken into consideration. After calculating the mean scores and standard deviations, paired and independent samples t- tests were utilized to determine if the differences were significant. Results showed statistically significant differences in favor of the experimental condition on the variable measured. The findings also demonstrated that PEER COACHING can be a vehicle to develop TEACHER EFFICACY.
