Abstract

Background: ECTOPIC PREGNANCY (EP) is a common condition which presents a major health problem for women of childbearing age. This study aims to analyze and identify RISK FACTORS that have the potential for EP and evaluating the contribution of the RISK FACTORS associated EP.Materials and Methods: In this case control study, performed from 2006 to 2011 at Arash hospital, the casepatients were a total of 83 women were diagnosed with EP. Control group consisting of 340 women who gave birth at the center at which the cases were treated. The basic recorded information included demographic characteristics, smoking habits, surgical, gynecological, obstetrics, sexual, contraceptive and infectious history and also fertility markers. The association between EP and the factors studied was measured by ORs.Results: In aggregate maternal age, spouse’s cigarette smoking, gravidity, prior spontaneous abortions, history of EP, tubal blockage, use of IUD, tubal damage, duration of marriage and first pregnancy interval, history of infertility were factors associated with increased risk of EP. BMI, menstrual bleeding pattern and induced abortion indicated no association with EP.Conclusion: By detection of historical and clinical RISK FACTORS of EP, a successful risk-reduction counseling program before conception can be implemented. Additional studies are needed to be performed on hormonal and immunologic factors may be involved in EP.
