Abstract:

Objective(s): Comparison of prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) assay with crocin assay.Materials and Methods: Twenty eight serum samples were chosen, PAB and the total antioxidant capacity were measured by PAB assay and crocin, respectively, and the correlation of both assays, along with their correlation with other clinical and biochemical parameters, were determined. Results: A significant negative correlation was established between PAB assay and crocin assay. Also a significant negative correlation was established between PAB and uric acid and creatinine. Conclusion: The results showed that by increasing the total antioxidant capacity, which is showed by crocin, the PAB shifts in favor of antioxidants, which is showed by PAB assay. Now, it could be considered that the PAB, along with other risk factors, might help in the prediction of the risk for cardiovascular events; and further research could clarify whether by application of PAB assay and appropriate interventions for correcting oxidative stress, progression of the cardiovascular disease could be reduced.

Background and Aim: The balance between ROS generation and antioxidant activity is critical to the pathogenesis of oxidative stress related disorders. In this study the prooxidant - antioxidant balance and its correlation with lipid profile and uric acid was determined to evaluate the PAB as a prognostic factor for CAD.Materials and Methods: Seventy - two patients and sixty eight healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. The values of PAB were determined by using standard solutions and ELISA method.Triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, HDL - cholesterol and uric acid were measured by enzymatic method. Results: The PAB values of CAD patients and control group were 70.01±3.36 (HK unit) and 66.40±2.84 (HK unit) respectively. There was no significant difference between PAB values among the two groups (P=0.41). There was no significant difference between uric acid levels among the two groups (P=0.46). There was a significant correlation between the uric acid values among patients and healthy volunteers and PAB values (P<0.01). There was a significant correlation between the TG, values among patients and healthy volunteers and PAB values (P<0.05).Discussion and Conclusion: This study showed oxidative stress could be used as a significant risk predictor in the coronary artery disease patients.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelination disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), which is believed to be associated with oxidative stress. Therefore, researchers try to find reliable biomarkers to monitor the disease and predict its prognosis. Cholesterol and lipids in the myelin sheath are vital for nerve cells. Serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is susceptible to lipid peroxidation induced by oxidative stress. This study aimed to evaluate oxidative stress markers in the serum of patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and examine their correlation with lipid markers. Methods: A total of 18 MS patients (14 women and 4 men) and 18 healthy subjects (matched by age and sex) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The serum samples were collected in both relapsing and remitting phases. The prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized LDL (oxLDL) were measured as markers of oxidative stress. Results: The mean age of participants was 29. 21 (22-42) years. In the comparison between the patient and control groups, the most differences were increased levels of PAB in the patient group (P < 0. 05), no difference between relapsing and remitting phases (P = 0. 995), increased MDA levels in the relapsing phase (P = 0. 013)––but no change in the remitting phase (P = 0. 068), no difference in LDL and oxLDL levels in the patient group (P > 0. 05), and MDA, LDL, and oxLDL levels did not have any significant correlation with PAB (P > 0. 05). Conclusion: High levels of oxidative stress markers were present in both phases of the disease. Lipid peroxidation markers (such as MDA) increased in the acute phase, but oxLDL did not change. Also, there was no significant correlation between oxidative stress and cholesterol markers.

PHENOLIC ACIDS FORM AN IMPORTANT CLASS OF COMPOUNDS THAT CAN INHIBIT THE OXIDATION OF MATERIALS. AFTER HYDROGEN LOSING PROCESS, THESE COMPOUNDS BECOME STABLE BY RESONANCE, CONJUGATION AND HYDROGEN BONDING [1]. IN THE PRESENT WORK, HYDROGEN ATOM TRANSFER (1) AND ELECTRON TRANSFER (2) MECHANISMS, WERE USED TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF SEVERAL SUBSTITUENTS ON THE ANTIOXIDANT AND PROOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF GALLIC ACID AND ITS DERIVATIVES (FIGURE) IN THE GAS PHASE AND SOLUTION MEDIA [2].

Abstract:

Introduction: The balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant activity is critical to the pathogenesis of many disorders including diabetic nephropathy. The aim of this study was to determine the Correlation between prooxidant – antioxidant balance (PAB) with microalbuminuria in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Methods: this descriptive cross- sectional study performed in Imam Reza Hospital in year 2012. Forty – six diabetic patients with microalbuminuria and Forty – three diabetic patients without microalbuminuria were enrolled in this study. Forty healthy volunteer selected as a control group. Microalbuminuria is defined as excretion of 30-300 microgram albumin in urine for every milligram of creatinin. The values of PAB were determined by using standard solutions and ELISA method. Pearson’s correlation coefficient method was used for specifying the correlation between our variables. Results: The values of PAB in diabetic patients were significantly higher than that in control group, however, there was no significant difference between PAB values among the two groups of diabetic patients with and without microalbuminuria. There was no significant correlation between PAB values and microalbuminuria in diabetic patients. There was a significant direct correlation between the PAB values andHbA1C in diabetic patients without microalbuminuria. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that oxidative stress processes were significantly higher in diabetic patients compared with controls but there was no significant correlation between PAB values and microalbuminuria in diabetic patients.

Abstract:

Background: There is evidence that oxidative stress can be considered as a critical event in the development of atherosclerotic complications. In this study, we aimed to assay the values of prooxidant‑ antioxidant balance (PAB) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), as a cardiovascular risk factor, and its relationship with some clinical, biochemical, and anthropometric parameters was examined. Materials and Methods: In a case– control study, forty CAD patients and forty age and body mass index (BMI)‑ matched healthy controls hospitalized in the cardiology section of Imam Ali hospital of Zahedan, Iran, were enrolled. The levels of serum lipid profile, C‑ reactive protein (CRP), blood pressure, BMI, and waist circumference (WC) were evaluated. The values of PAB were also assayed simultaneously by photometric method, using 3, 3′ , 5, 5′ ‑ tetramethylbenzidine and its cation, used as an indicator of redox. Results: PAB was found to be significantly higher in CAD patients (P < 0. 05) as compared with control group. The obese patients had higher values than nonobese patients and controls (P < 0. 05). In CAD patients, a significant positive correlation was demonstrated between WC (r = 0. 56, P = 0. 05), high‑ sensitivity‑ CRP (r = 0. 65, P = 0. 04), cholesterol (r = 0. 36, P = 0. 052), and triglyceride (r = 0. 29, P = 0. 055) with PAB. Conclusion: The study shows that the PAB assay in conjunction with other risk factors can be used as an independent prognostic predictor of CAD, particularly in patients who need antioxidant therapy.
