Abstract:

Introduction: The present study aimed to evaluate the Effect of topical tetracycline gel application with non surgical periodontal therapy on HbA1c and lipid profile in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: A total of 30 type 2 diabetic patients were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received scaling and root planning, whereas the second group received scaling and root planning with topically applied tetracycline gel. Clinical factors such as GI, PI, PPD and biochemical factors such as HbA1c and lipid profile were assessed in beginning of study and 3 months later. Results: Comparing the clinical factors between the two groups revealed that periodontal pocket depth significantly reduced in tetracycline-received group. Regarding the biochemical factors, triglyceride levels decreased significantly in tetracycline-received group. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in regard with other clinical and biochemical factors. Conclusion: The study findings demonstrated that clinical and biochemical parameters have been improved after non surgical periodontal treatment in both groups. Although it seems that application of topical tetracycline gel combined with non-surgical periodontal therapy is effective in improvement of some clinical and biochemical factors like PPD and TG, it doesn’t offer any superiority in regard with other factors compared to mere non surgical periodontal therapy.

Background and Objectives: The fetal period is an important stage in a person’, s life. Exercise during pregnancyhas been considered as a positive factor in preventing chronic diseases in adulthood. The aim ofthis study was to investigate the role of Maternal high intensity exercise before and during pregnancy onserum levels of lipid profile of adult offspring. Subjects and Methods: Twenty-four rats (170-200g) were divided into three Maternal groups: Control (C), exercise Before Pregnancy (BP) and exercise before and during pregnancy (BDP). Exercise performed beforepregnancy for six weeks and during pregnancy for three weeks, one minute with 80%-95% vo2maxswitching with two minutes of active recovery (65% vo2max) for five days/week. After end of the trainingbirth process and breastfeeding, the offspring were divided according to theirs’, s mother group and theywere kept until adult age. The serum levels of LDL, HDL, TG and Cho were measured by enzymic method. Results: The one-way ANOVA result showed that Maternal exercise before and during pregnancy significantlyreduced LDL, Cho and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio in male (P=0. 03, P=0. 2, P=0. 04) and female(P=0. 00, P=0. 02, P=0. 04) offspring. Conclusion: This finding suggests that Maternal high-intensity-interval training as an appropriate environmentalintervention can help to improve the health of the next generation.

Abstract:

Background: Psoriasis is a common chronic papulosquamous skin disease. Cardiovascular diseases have been reported with greater frequency in affected individuals. This is mainly due to higher plasma lipid level. This study was conducted with the aim of determining lipid profile in psoriatic patients referring to Booali and Loghman hospitals in 2001. Materials and methods: It was a case-control study. Our exclusion criteria were familial hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, chronic renal failure, connective tissue disease, and users of the following drugs: antilipidemic agents, oral steroids, cyclosporine, and B-blockers. The control group was matched according to the sex, age, body mass index, blood pressure, daily physical activity, and smoking. Blood samples were obtained following 14-hour fasting status, and serum level of triglyceride, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and VLDL were all determined. Statistical analysis was done by Hest. Results: 67 individuals were studied in each group. The study population included 38 males and 29 females with the mean (±SD) age of 37±17 years. For the case group, mean serum level of TG, cholesterol, LDL HDL, and VLDL were 177±188, 201±44, 126±33, 43±11, and 3l±21 mg/dl, respectively. These figures were 99±29, 183±42, 103±41, 6l±11, and 20±6 mg/dl for the control group, respectively. Significant differences were noted between the groups. Conclusion: Results have revealed higher plasma level of TG, cholesterol, LDL, and VLDL and lower level of HDL in psoriatic patients. This could be a contributing factor in cardiovascular diseases. Thus, psoriatic patients should be informed of cardiovascular risk factors and their serum lipid level should be monitored periodically.

Abstract:

Background: Changes in the lipid profile have been suggested as a risk factor for developing ischemic stroke.Their role in intra-cerebral hemorrhage, however, is not clear. The present study was designed to evaluate the lipid profile levels of patients who had experienced an acute stroke during the first 24-hour and to compare these levels in different patients suffering from the stroke, either hemorrhagic or ischemic, and healthy individuals.

Abstract:

Background: Neonatal problems and adverse outcomes may be minimized by up to 90–75% when preterm delivery is diagnosed early and managed properly. This study aimed to determine the association of Maternal plasma lipid indices with the occurrence of spontaneous preterm labor. Material and Methods: This matched pair case–control study was performed on 80 pregnant women referred to a teaching hospital in Tehran for childbirth in 2019. The lipid profile was assessed in women with spontaneous preterm labor and term birth. According to age, Body Mass Index (BMI), pregnancy number, employment status, and educational level, the women in each group were paired. Data were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, Chi-square, linear regression, and conditional logistic regression. Results: Mean serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein were all significantly higher in the case group compared with the control group (p < 0. 05). The conditional logistic regression test confirmed that this association remained significant even after adjusting the effect of potentially confounding factors such as Maternal age and body mass index. In addition, in linear regression the increased levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein were found to be associated with 3. 33-fold (1. 32. –5. 32 95% CI, p < 0. 001), 2. 94-fold (1. 60–3. 14 95% CI, p = 0. 002), and 2. 46-fold (1. 31. –2. 91 95% CI, p = 0. 006) increased risk of preterm labor, respectively. Conclusions: High triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein serum levels may be linked to an increased chance of spontaneous preterm labor, which might be considered a risk factor for this pregnancy problem.

Abstract:

Background Pre-eclampsia is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among pregnant women. This study was done with the objective of measuring abdominal aorta intima-media thickness, serum level of leptin, and lipid profile in neonates of pre-eclampsia mothers and comparing them with neonates of mothers without pre-eclampsia (control group). Materials and Methods Ninety neonates of pregnant mothers, who delivered their babies at Imam Reza Hospital of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, were included. They were divided into mild preeclampsia (15 neonates), severe pre-eclampsia (15 neonates), and control group (60 neonates). Their blood samples were delivered to the laboratory to assay leptin and lipid profile. Also, echocardiography was done to determine the thickness of intima-media of the abdominal aorta. The data were analyzed by SPSS software using Pearson correlation test and analysis of variance (for variables with normal distribution) and Spearman coefficient test and Kruskal-Wallis tests for variables with non-normal distribution. Results The minimum and maximum ages of mothers in all groups were 20 and 35 years, respectively. There was no significant difference between the mild pre-eclampsia, severe pre-eclampsia, and those without pre-eclampsia regarding serum leptin level and lipid profile (P> 0. 05). However, there was significant difference between the groups regarding intima-media thickness (P< 0. 05). Mean (± standard deviation) intima-media thickness was the highest in severe pre-eclampsia group (0. 629± 0. 034) and the lowest in control group (0. 472± 0. 058). Conclusion Neonates of mothers with pre-eclampsia had higher measurements of abdominal aorta intima-media thickness compared to control group.
