Abstract:

Introduction: Surgical treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation (LDH) is one of the most common surgeries in the world. In many studies the success is related to the radiological results. The aim of this study, however, is to determine the effects of some psychological factors such as Depression, anxiety and patients’ expectations concerning their satisfaction from Disk Herniation surgery (DHS).Materials and Methods: Sixty patients who were candidates for DHS were examined for Depression, expectations, anxiety and satisfaction before and three months after the surgery using standard questionnaires. Results: The patients consisted of 33 females (55%) and 27 males (45%). The average of pain acuity before the surgery was measured as 7.25 units which decreased to 2.1 units after the operation. 93.3% of the subjects were diagnosed with anxiety of different degrees and 66.7% with Depression. 70% had high expectations. The patients’ satisfaction rate was ranging from 1.7 to 8.9 (mean= 5.5).  Satisfaction gained the highest rate in the patients aging between 30-39 years old. Also, Depression and high expectations were found to be associated with lower levels of satisfaction. Conclusion: Depression decreases patient’s satisfaction while low expectations can increase it.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Introduction: Evidence shows that some men suffer from Postpartum Depression (PPD), and that the adverse effects of this unknown phenomenon affect them and their family. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine paternal PPD and its relationship with some factors, especially maternal PPD.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 205 couples who were selected using a random cluster sampling in seven health centers affiliated to the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences six to 12 weeks after childbirth. Data was collected from fathers using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and a demographic questionnaire. The Edinburgh questionnaire was also used for the mothers. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson correlation as well as the Chi-square and linear regression. Results: A total of 11.7% of the fathers had Depression symptoms. There was a significant and direct correlation between the paternal and maternal PPD scores (r=0.29, P=0.001). Among the sociodemographic and fertility factors, there was a significant relationship only between a family’s livelihood situation, the number of abortions and the number of pregnancies with the parental Depression scores (P=0.05). In the regression analysis, maternal PPD (b0.22) and the family’s livelihood situation (ß0.44) predicted paternal Depression (P=0.001). This model totally explained about 30% of the changes in paternal PPD (R2=0.298).Conclusion: Considering the significant frequency of Depression in fathers and the role of maternal Depression as well as the family’s livelihood situation, it is recommended that evaluation should be carried out on paternal PPD and its risk factors in order to prevent and treat it in a timely manner.

Abstract:

Introduction: Depression is one form of common mental disorder that significantly impacts adolescents. The emotional well-being of parents and family can directly influence adolescents’ mental states. This study aimed to assess the association between parental Depression and adolescents aged 15–19 years. Methods: This study utilized data from the third, fourth, and fifth cycles of the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) conducted jointly by Research and Development Corporation and Universitas Gadjah Mada. Adolescent Depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression-10, in which IFLS-5 (2014) data were analyzed. At the same time, parental Depression was measured using data from IFLS-4 (2007) and IFLS-5 (2014). The study sample consisted of adolescents living with their parents, and 1104 adolescents were involved in the analysis. A multivariate logistic regression model of potentially contributing factors was employed to analyze the role of parental Depression in adolescent Depression. Results: A substantial portion of adolescents (21. 2%) reported experiencing Depression, with a higher prevalence observed among girls (25. 3%). Adolescents were more likely to experience Depression if their parents also reported depressive symptoms. According to 2014 data, as many as 25. 4% of adolescents with mothers experiencing Depression also reported feeling depressed. Meanwhile, 28. 1% of adolescents experienced Depression at the same time that their fathers felt depressed. Parental Depression affected adolescent Depression and had a significant and greater effect on female adolescents. Conclusion: This study revealed a strong association between parental Depression and adolescent Depression in Indonesia. The results underscore the importance of family-based interventions to reduce the adverse effects of Depression on adolescents.
