Abstract:

Introduction: Calcifying odontogenic CYST (COC) is an odontogenic CYST that sometimes shows aggressive behavior, while DENTIGEROUS CYST (DC) always has a benign nonaggressive course. There are evidences that myofibroblasts are involved in invasion and their role in biologic behavior of odontogenic CYSTs has been less understood. So, the aim of the present study was to compare the role of myofibroblasts in COC and DC. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 20 COCs and 20 DCs were studied. Four-micron sections were prepared from tissue blocks and stained with α-SMA antibody using immunohistochemistry. Percentages of myofibroblasts were semi quantitatively classified into negative (<5% of cells were positive), weak (5-50% cells were positive) and strong (>50% of cells were positive). Percentage of myofibroblasts was compared between COC and DC groups using t-test and Chi-Square statistical tests. Results: Means of myofibroblasts percentages in COC and DC groups were respectively 35± 33 and 32± 30 that did not show significant difference between COC and DC groups (P=0. 76). There was not any significant difference between COC and DC groups with respect to semi quantitative classification of percentage of myofibroblasts (P=0. 62). Conclusion: Myofibroblasts probably do not play a significant role in different biologic behaviors of calcifying odontogenic and DENTIGEROUS CYSTs.

Abstract:

One specific type of keratinized odontogenic CYSTs is orthokeratinized odontogenic CYST which is different from odontogenic keratoCYST in clinical and pathological features completely. Also orthokeratinized odontogenic CYST can mimic typical characteristic clinicopathologic features of some other developmental odontogenic lesions such as DENTIGEROUS CYST and the odontogenic keratoCYST, there is no previous report based on transforming of DENTIGEROUS CYST to orthokeratinized odontogenic CYST. We described a case of orthokeratinized odontogenic CYST originated from a DENTIGEROUS CYST in a 30-year-old female discovering accidentally in routine radiography.

Abstract:

Introduction: Glypican-3 is a cell surface protein, a member of glypican family and belongs to agroup of heparin sulfate proteoglycan bound to the cell membrane through a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor. GPC3 is involved in the regulation of cell proliferationand morphogenesis. Considering the distinct clinical behavior of odontogenic lesions, the aim of the present study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expressionof GPC3 in DENTIGEROUS CYST, odontogenic keratoCYST and radicular CYST. Materials& Methods: In this descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study, 60 tissue samples ofodontogenic CYSTs consist of 20 radicular CYSTs (RC), 20 odontogenic keratoCYSTs(OKC) and 20 DENTIGEROUS CYSTs (DC) were reviewed by immunohistochemistrystaining for GPC3 marker. Results: In this study, both membranous and cytoplasmic expression of glypican-3 wasobserved. GPC3 expression was seen in 60% of OKCs (12/20). No GPC3immunoreactivity was seen in DCs and RCs. Conclusion: A high expression rate of GPC3 was detected in OKC, which might be related to theaggressive behavior and high recurrence rate of OKC; however, further studies arenecessary to confirm this hypothesis.

Abstract:

DENTIGEROUS CYST is one of the most common odontogenic CYSTs of the jaw that slowly grows around an unerupted tooth crown. Nasopalatine duct CYST is a non-odontogenic common jaw CYST. Co-occurrence of nasopalatine duct CYST and DENTIGEROUS CYST in the same location of the same jaw is extremely rare. Odontogenic and non-odontogenic CYSTs occurring simultaneously in non-syndromic patients is rare. The lesions must be fully extracted by surgery. We report the treatment procedure of a patient suffering from this rare phenomenon. Keywords: Odontogenic CYST,Nonodontogenic CYST,Impacted tooth.

Abstract:

In this paper, an unusual case of pigmented DENTIGEROUS CYST in a 37-year-old Iranian man with multiple DENTIGEROUS CYSTs of maxilla and mandible is reported. In addition to the characteristic histopathologic features of DENTIGEROUS CYST, numerous melanin granules which were distributed throughout the epithelial lining of one of these CYSTs were also noted. The histochemical study using Fontana's staining indicated that the pigment was melanin and many of the cells containing melanin were immunohistochemically positive for S-100 protein. Although no firm conclusion could be drawn from the present case regarding melanin origin in DENTIGEROUS CYST, the possible histogenesis of melanocytes in odontogenic lesions is discussed.

Abstract:

DENTIGEROUS CYSTs are the second most common odontogenic CYSTs after radicular CYSTs and are most commonly seen in as-sociation with third molars and maxillary canines. Only 5% of DENTIGEROUS CYSTs involve supernumerary teeth, of which me-siodens is the most frequent type. This paper presents a case of DENTIGEROUS CYST associated with a mesiodens that caused a painless swelling in the upper lip of an 18-year-old female. The patient was treated surgically by enucleation of total CYST and surgical extraction of mesiodens under local anesthesia.

Abstract:

DENTIGEROUS CYSTs are developmental odontogenic lesions and represent the second most common type of jaw CYSTs, typically associated with the crowns of unerupted or impacted teeth. They are frequently discovered incidentally during routine radiographic evaluations, particularly in younger individuals. The present study describes a rare case of a 62-year-old edentulous female who presented with purulent discharge beneath her maxillary complete denture. Clinical and radiographic examinations, including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), revealed an infected DENTIGEROUS CYST associated with an impacted maxillary canine and an unusual pattern of coronal tooth resorption. This finding is atypical, as DENTIGEROUS CYSTs are more commonly linked to root resorption. The case underscores the diagnostic value of CBCT in evaluating atypical presentations of odontogenic CYSTs and highlights the importance of early detection and management to prevent complications such as infection and structural compromise.
