Title

Cultural Capital of Medical Students: Analysis of Dimensions and Demographic Differences

Pages

  83-105

Abstract

This study examines the status and dimensions of cultural capital among medical students in Iran, considering its significance as a key component of social transformation and the University's role in producing and transmitting this capital. Grounded in Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital and focusing on its three dimensions—objectified, embodied, and institutionalized—the research adopts a quantitative survey methodology. The study population comprises medical students nationwide, with a multistage sampling method yielding a sample size of 21,000 participants. Findings indicate that the overall level of cultural capital among students is below average. Furthermore, significant differences were observed across the three dimensions of cultural capital based on demographic variables such as gender, year of enrollment, and educational level: in the objectified dimension, female students, those in higher academic years, and doctoral candidates demonstrated higher cultural capital; in the embodied dimension, male students, those in middle or lower academic years, and those in higher educational levels exhibited greater cultural capital; and in the institutionalized dimension, female students, those in advanced academic years, and those in higher educational levels displayed superior cultural capital. These results encourage a deeper understanding of cultural capital within Iran's medical academic community and can inform policies aimed at its enhancement.
