IN THIS PAPER, THE THREE WELL-KNOWN DC-AC CONVERTER TOPOLOGIES NAMED VOLTAGE Source INVERTERS (VSIS), CURRENT Source INVERTERS (CSIS) AND IMPEDANCE Source INVERTERS (ZSIS) ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED WITH EACH OTHER.THE VSI AND CSI TOPOLOGIES ARE COMPARED FROM EFFICIENCY, DYNAMIC RESPONSE, MOTOR REQUIREMENTS, POWER QUALITY AND RELIABILITY POINTS OF VIEW. NEXT, THE ZSI TOPOLOGY IS STUDIED TO FIND OUT WHETHER IT CAN BE A SUITABLE ALTERNATIVE TO BE EMPLOYED INSTEAD OF VSIS AND CSIS IN ELECTRICAL DRIVE APPLICATIONS. THE ZSI TOPOLOGY PROVIDES FEATURES SUCH AS THE ADDITIONAL ZERO SWITCHING STATE. THEREFORE, THIS TOPOLOGY CAN OPERATE IN BOTH BUCK AND BOOST MODES WHICH ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR AN ADDITIONAL DC-DC CONVERTER. FINALLY, THE VSI AND ZSI PERFORMANCES ARE COMPARED FOR TWO DIFFERENT MODULATION SCHEMES. FOR THIS PURPOSE, SOME SIMULATIONS ARE DONE IN THE MATLAB/SIMULINK ENVIRONMENT AND THE RESULTS ARE ANALYZED.
