Airway mucus is difficult to clear and to improve lung function clearance of mucus is necessary. The deep coughing, chest physiotherapy, high frequency chest wall oscillation etc. are some of the best methods to clear excessive mucus from lung airways. In this article we analysed the behavior of fluid flow between parallel walls, where both walls are porous and the flow is induced by the oscillation of these walls and pressure gradient; which is applicable for clearance of mucus from lung airways. Generalized couette flow is applicable to model the oscillation of parallel walls, however the laminar flow of viscous fluid is taken under consideration. The generalized Navier-Stokes equations are applied to make various hypotheses and finite difference scheme is used to solve the problem numerically. Effect of wall oscillation, wall porosity, pressure due to porous media on mucus clearance and particle aspect ratio on the deposition of nonspherical nanoparticles are analysed graphycally after simulating the problem on MATLAB R2013a by user defind code. Simulation show an excellent agreement of unsteady flow of viscous fluid at large values of time and significant correlation between pressure gradient and porosity of walls, frequency of wall oscillation and their imapct on mucus clearance are obtained. In addion it is observed that fluid and particle velocity are increased with the enhancement of media porosity, breathing frequency and aspect ratio. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of wall movement, wall porosity, pressure on wall, wall oscillating frequency on the clearance of mucus from lung airways.

Fish epidermal mucus contains innate immune components, secreted by globlet cells that provide the primary defence against different pathogenic microbes and act as a barrier between fish and its immediate niche. The major function of mucus includes entrapment and sloughing of microbes. The mucus also contains many factors such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), lysozymes, lectins, proteases, etc that provide innate immunity. The AMPs secreted by epidermal mucus cells displayed antimicrobial activity against a variety of pathogens. Besides, mucosal lysozyme was found to produce significant bacteriolytic action whereas different proteases found in skin mucus of fish can kill the pathogens by cleaving its protein or by activating immunological mechanisms. Lectins are also mucosal agglutinins that play a diverse role in innate immunity like opsonization, activation of complement, etc. Epidermal mucus in fish thus provides an innate and fast acting protection which is non-specific and is found to be relatively temperature independent. The aim of the present review is to provide a broad overview of the different components of epidermal mucus including AMPs, proteases, lysozymes as well as their mode of action on pathogens.

A dynamic oscillatory technique was used to assess the effect of polysorbate non-ionic surfactants on mucus rheology. Adherent mucus gel was scraped from the surface mucosa of pig stomachs and purified by gel exclusion chromatography followed by ultrafiltration and gelation. Rheological measurements of this gel were carried out on a Carri-Med Controlled Stress Rheometer. Appropriate volumes of surfactant solution were added to weighed samples of mucus gel so that a final concentration of 20 mM surfactant was achieved in a gel containing 8% w/w solids content. Polysorbate 20 (PS20), polysorbate 40 (PS40), polysorbate 60 (PS60) and polysorbate 80 (PS80) all decreased both storage (elastic) modulus G’ and loss (viscous) modulus G’’ significantly at 10 Hz (P<0.05, ANOVA). The extent of rheological changes induced by the four polysorbates could be ranked as: PS80>PS20>PS60>PS40. The mechanisms by which surfactants disturb the mucus structure are not fully understood, nonetheless, they could possibly affect the mucus gel properties by causing depletion of the glycoprotein constituents such as non-mucin proteins and mucin associated lipids. This might lead to the conclusion that polysorbates, by reducing the viscoelasticity of mucus gel could alleviate its barrier properties and facilitate the diffusion of concomitantly administered drugs via mucus gel.

Embryo transfer and its related factors received little clinical attention and had been, until recently, the most inefficient step in in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Factors which appear to influence implantation rates are: contamination of the catheter tip with cervical bacteria, stimulation of uterine contractions during the procedure, the type of catheter, ultrasound guidance during the transfer, the position of the embryos in the uterine cavity and perhaps cervical mucus (1-4). Easy and atraumatic transfer is essential for successful implantation and the embryos need to be placed in the middle of the cavity, away from the fundus (5).
