Objective: Diagnosis of a cutaneous tumor mass in DOG for the first time in IRAN.Design: Case report. Animal: An 11- year- old male Dachshund.Procedure: The DOG with a cutaneous mass in the left perineum, was referred to the Small Animal Clinic, Faculty of veterinary Medicine, University of Tehran. The DOG was examined clinically and radiographs were taken from chest and ultrasonography of abdominal cavity was performed. The mass was removed surgically and fixed in buffered 10% formalin, tissue sections were made at 5m and stained with H&E. Results: A firm, non pedunculated (2.6x2.2x 1cm in diameter) mass was found macroscopically. The mass was umbilicated and ulcerated, overlying skin showed superficial necrotic layers. The cut surface was tan in color and lobulated with delicate collagenous stroma and areas of hemorrhages. Microscopically, the neoplastic cells were large, round to polyhedral with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and distinct cell boundaries and a centrally located round, vesicular nuclei. The cells resembled hepatocyte and generally showed disorderly growth and didn't form discrete lobules. Histopathologic examination revealed severe pleomorphism, frequent mitotic figures, areas of hemorrhages and the presence of scattered individual and small nests of invasive neoplastic eclls in the supporting stromal connective tissue. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations revealed no metastases in thorax and abdominal cavity. Clinical implications: According to location, macroscopic and histopathologic characteristics this mass was diagnosed as relatively well differentiated perianal glands adenocarcinoma. Hyperplasia and adenoma of perianal glands arc frequently observed, however, it is the first report of perianal glands adenocarcinoma from Iran.

Abstract:

Case description- A three-month-old male German Shepherd DOG, with signs of instability to stand, ataxia and radiographic symptoms of chondrodysplasia is presented. The symptoms were developed since birth.Clinical Findings- On physical examination, the affected pup did not show any swelling, pain or other abnormality in the long bones by palpation, but he had ataxia in walking. Ocular examinations revealed no lesions. In radiography, the distal right and left ulnar metaphysic were flattened and the physes were much wider than normal. The carpal bones were smaller in size than those in normal age. An increased radiopacity (sclerotic band) in the metaphyseal part of both radial and ulnar bones was observed adjacent to the physes. Radiographs were also taken from ribs and there was no abnormality in costochondral junctions.Treatment and outcome- There is no specific treatment for this disorder. The pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory/analgesic drugs (eg. aspirin). In this case, the DOG was euthanized upon the owner’s request. According to the radiographic findings and our clinical observation, chondrodysplasia was diagnosed.Clinical Relevance- There is no definitive treatment for such cases and the management program depends on the owner and the veterinarian decisions. It is better to stop breeding of these animals.

Abstract:

Trypanosoma are extra-erythrocytic, protozoan parasites of domestic and wild animals. It is transmitted by biting flies and a cause of fever, anemia, myocarditis and corneal opacity. In the present study, Trypanosoma infection is reported in a male bull DOG of two years age at Lahore, Pakistan. Clinical signs and symptoms of infection are recorded. Confirmation of case was done by microscopic examination of Trypanosoma organism in thick blood smear. Furthermore, their effect on certain hematological parameters was studied and concluded that there was decrease of hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and packed cell volume (PCV) while erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR) was increased in the infected DOG. The animal was successfully treated with single dose of diminazene diaceturate at the dose rate of 3.5 mg/kg body weight, intramuscularly alongwith the supportive therapy.

Abstract:

Background: DOG bite is one of the most common childhood accidents causing significant morbidity and mortality in pediatrics age group (1). The exposed position compounded by the short stature of children makes the face very vulnerable to DOG bite or animal bite injuries. Unlike wounds inflicted by assaults and accidents, animal bite wounds are distinctive as they are puncture type deep wounds which are injected by the bite force, with inoculums of pathogenic bacteria from the saliva of the attacking DOG.Case Report: A case of a 2 month-old child who had succumbed to multiple facial and head bite injuries is presented. At autopsy, multiple bite wounds were noted on the upper part of body like face, head, chest and abdomen. Distinctive bite marks diagnostic of canine dentition were present, most prominently on the head, face and chest. Death was due to cranio-cerebral damage. Conclusion: Public health notification should occur for all DOG bites. This would facilitate the development of regional DOG bite registries with information on incidence and DOGs at risk, which in turn could guide policies such as leash laws and licensing.

Abstract:

The hepatoid glands or the perianal glands in canidae are transformed sebaceous glands found in the subcutaneous tissues around the anal region in male and female DOGs. In Comparison with adenomas of the hepatoid glands, carcinomas of these glands occur with less frequency. In addition, tumors of these glands are occasionally observed ectopically on the outer surface of other organs such as tail, perineal area, prepuce, flank, thighs, back, lumbosacral area, midline of the abdomen, chin, head and neck. This report describes histopathological features of two cases of ectopic hepatoid gland carcinomas in two breeds of Terrier and German shepherd DOGs. The first case was a Terrier DOG, male, 18 years old with the tumor having a relatively hard consistency on palpation, without pain and ulcerative appearance along with hemorrhage which had grown on the flank region and the left hand ectopically. The second case was a German shepherd DOG, male, 10 years old, which was referred to the clinic due to existence of a large and ulcerative mass with hard consistency in palpation on the back of the neck. The DOG was febrile and anorexic because of ulcerative and infectious nature of the tumoral mass. In histopathological examination of the lesions in both cases, proliferation of hepatoid cells, mitotic figures, congestion, hemorrhage, necrosis and infiltration of inflammatory cells, especially neutrophils was observed.

Abstract:

Cardiac manifestations of the hydatid cyst are relatively uncommon. Cardiac involvement may lead to the compression of vital organs, pulmonary hypertension, pericardial effusion, and even anaphylaxis. A 45-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Department of Tehran Heart Center with chest pain. Cardiac examination revealed relatively muffled heart sounds. Echocardiography demonstrated a round echolucent well-defined mass (47 × 25 mm) on the base and the mid lateral wall of the left ventricle (LV) without septation. Computed tomography angiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large (52 mm) exophytic mass originating from the lateral wall of the LV with upward growth between the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and the left circumflex artery with no LV cavity obliteration. Coronary angiography showed upward displacement in the LAD with significant compressive narrowing. The patient underwent mass resection and grafting of the LAD. During surgery after the incision of the pericardium, the hydatid cyst entity of the mass was revealed. Hydatid cysts covered the anterolateral surface of the LV with adhesion to the pericardium. The patient recovered from the surgery uneventfully. Pathology report and immunological assays confirmed the diagnosis. During a 6-month postoperative follow-up period, she remained asymptomatic with complete recovery and no recurrence.

Abstract:

Clinical, laboratory and radiographic data was studied from a 13 years old male Doberman DOG with asymmetric ataxia, nystagmus, head tilt to right side, vomiting, falling and anorhexia. The absence of physical abnormalities of the tympanic membrane and absence of radiographic changes within the tympanic bulla or petrous temporal bone were the criteria used to make the diagnosis of “Geriatric canine vestibular disease”.

Abstract:

Splenic masses are localized palpable enlargements can be classified as neoplastic and nonneoplastic. The aim of this report is to describe the clinical and pathological findings of a splenic hematoma and differentiate it from a splenic hemangiosarcoma. Clinical examinations of a 7-year-old male German Shepherd DOG with a history of lethargy, inappetence, weight loss and reluctant to move revealed a large painful mass in the left anterior half of the abdomen. Abdominal radiography showed a large mass with soft tissue density in the left of the abdomen.Ultrasonographic examination showed an encapsulated mass with echogenicity which resembles echogenicity of spleen in the ventral abdomen with multiple anechoic regions. Macroscopically, the spleen was large, severely congested and contained a spherical, 14.5 cm in diameter, mass that was located on the hilus. Microscopically, the cyst was filled with erythrocytes and lined a thick layer of connective tissue without any malignancy. There were abundant hemosiderin-riched macrophages. The mass was diagnosed as splenic hematoma. Splenic hematoma may mimic changes which are seen in splenic neoplasms and must be carefully differentiated from them.
