In 1996, an outbreak of an acute highly contagious respiratory and ophthalmic disease occurred in a quail breeding farm, which produced a high mortality rate in quails. In order to determine the etiologic agent of the disease, samples were taken from conjunctiva, respiratory tract, and intestinal contents of affected birds which showed conjunctivitis and severe respiratory symptoms. By use of tests such as inoculation into 9-12 days old SPF chick embryos via the allantoic sac, cultivation on primary chick embryo liver cells, electron microscopic examination, H & E staining of the monolayers, thermal and lipid solvent stability, pH resistance, agglutination of rat RBCs and also serological tests (Le neutralization, cross neutralization, agar gel precipitation and electrophoresis) were carried out. The results showed that the causative agent is quail bronchitis virus (QBV). This disease has been reported by Razi vaccine and serum research institute in Iran for the first time.
