AUGMENTATION ileocystoplasty IS A COMMONLY USED TECHNIQUE FOR RECONSTRUCTION OF THE DYSFUNCTION BLADDER. COMPLICATIONS INCLUDE THE ABSORPTIVE AND SECRETORY FUNCTIONS OF THE INTESTINAL MUCOSA WHICH MAY QUESTION THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF THE PROCEDURE. AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS PERFORMED ON 27 FEMALE 1-2 YEAR-OLD IRANIAN MIXED BRED DOGS BETWIN 15-24 KG BODYWEIGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING PROTOCOL. NEGATIVE CONTROL GROUP (NC): NO ileocystoplasty WERE PERFORMED ON SIX DOGS. POSITIVE CONTROL GROUP (PC): ROUTINE ileocystoplasty WITHOUT ENZYMATIC TREATMENT OF ILEAL SEGMENT WERE PERFORMED ON SIX DOGS. 5, 10, 15, 20 AND 25 MINUTES ENZYMATIC TREATMENT OF ILEAL SEGMENT WERE PERFORMED RESPECTIVELY ON TREATMENT GROUPS EACH CONTAINING THREE DOGS (5MET, 10MET, 15MET, 20MET, AND 25MET GROUPS). FIVE WEEKS LATER, DOGS WERE ANESTHETIZED, AND GLUCOSE ABSORPTION TEST WITH 50% DEXTROSE WAS PERFORMED. BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS (BGL) WERE COMPARED BEFORE STUDY (T1), 2 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY IN PC AND OTHER TREATMENT GROUPS (T2), BEFORE ANESTHESIA (T3), AFTER ANSTHESIA (T4) AND IN 5 MINUTES INTERVALS UP TO 25 MINUTES (T5 TO T9 RESPECTIVELY) AFTER 50 ML DEXTROSE INFUSION VIA 12 F FOLEY CATHETER INTO BLADDER AND ALSO AMONG GROUPS. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN BGL WERE FOUND BETWEEN NC AND PC, 5MET, 10MET AND 15MET GROUPS, WHICH REVEAL INSUFFICIENT ENZYMATIC TREATMENT TIME. ALTHOUGH BGL WERE LOWER IN 20MET IN COMPARISON TO NC, 5MET, 10 MET, AND 15 MET IT WAS NOT SIGNIFICANT. BGL WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER IN 25MET IN COMPARISON TO PC, WHICH REVEAL PROPER ENZYMATIC TREATMENT TIME FOR THE ILEAL SEGMENT. THERE WERE NOT SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN BGL AT T1 TO T9 IN 25MET AND NC, BUT BGL WERE FOUND SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER AT T5 TO T9 IN PC, 5MET, 10MET, 15MET AND 20MET. THIS SHOWS THAT 25 MINUTES ENZYMATIC TREATMENT OF ILEAL SEGMENT FOR ileocystoplasty DID NOT INCREASE BGL UP TO 25 MINUTES AFTER GLUCOSE ABSORPTION TEST. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT 25 MINUTES OF ENZYMATIC TREATMENT OF ILEAL SEGMENT BE USED FOR AUGMENTATION ileocystoplasty OF DYSFUNCTION BLADDER IN DOGS.
