Abstract

 BACKGROUND AND AIM: ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IS A GROWING CONCERN IN THE WORLD AND THE WIDESPREAD USE OF ANTIBIOTICS HAS PRODUCED ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE FOR MANY BACTERIAL PATHOGENS.ADVANCES IN NANOTECHNOLOGY HAVE OPENED NEW HORIZONS IN NANOMEDICINE, ALLOWING THE SYNTHESIS OF NANOPARTICLES THAT CAN BE ASSEMBLED INTO COMPLEX ARCHITECTURES. IN THIS STUDY SYNERGISTIC ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF COMBINED SILVER NANOPARTICLES WITH VANCOMYCIN WAS TESTED AGAINST THE VANCOMYCIN-RESISTANT ENTEROCOCCI (VRE).METHODS: THIOGLYCOLIC ACID-STABILIZED SPHERICAL SILVER NANOPARTICLES ARE PREPARED BY CHEMICAL REDUCTION METHOD. THE SYNTHESIS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES WAS DETECTED BY USING UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETER AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM). THE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF AGNPS IN COMBINATION WITH VANCOMYCIN, WAS DETERMINED IN VITRO, USING MINIMUM INHIBITORY CONCENTRATION (MIC) DETERMINATION METHOD.RESULTS: RESULTS SHOWED THAT, THE MINIMUM INHIBITORY CONCENTRATION FOR AGNPS WAS 500PPM AND FOR PURE VANCOMYCIN WAS MORE THAN 2000PPM (MIC>2000PPM) AND IN COMBINATION USE OF AGNP WITH VANCOMYCIN, MIC WAS 250PPM.CONCLUSION: THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS INVESTIGATION SUGGEST THAT THE COMBINATION OF THE INEFFECTIVE VANCOMYCIN WITH AGNPS EFFECTIVELY INHIBITS THE GROWTH OF VRE.
