PREVALENCE OF MULTIDRUG-RESISTANT ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT PATIENTS

Abstract

 BACKGROUND AND AIM: ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A MAJOR PATHOGEN THAT RESPONSIBLE FOR SEVERE INFECTIONS, ESPECIALLY IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNITS (ICU) PATIENTS. SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF INFECTIONS, INCLUDING PNEUMONIA, URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS, BACTEREMIA, WOUND INFECTIONS AND EVEN MENINGITIS, ARE CAUSED BY THIS ORGANISM. THE INCREASING PREVALENCE OF MULTIDRUG-RESISTANT (MDR) A.BAUMANNII-ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS, IN HEALTH CARE SETTINGS POSES A GREAT THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH. IN THIS STUDY, WE EVALUATED PREVALENCE OF MDR A.BAUMANNII AND TYPES OF INFECTION.METHODS: IN THIS STUDY, 100 A.BAUMANNII ISOLATES WERE COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS CLINICAL SAMPLES OF THE ICUS PATIENTS IN ISFAHAN HOSPITALS FROM 2012 TO 2013. AFTER PHENOTYPIC TESTS, ALL STRAINS WERE CONFIRMED GENETICALLY BY BLAOXA-51LIKE GENE PCR. THE PATTERN OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE WAS EVALUATED BY DISK DIFFUSION METHOD ACCORDING TO CLSI GUIDELINES.RESULTS: ALL 100 STUDIED ISOLATES CONTAINED BLAOXA-51-LIKE GENE AND WERE KNOWN AS A.BAUMANNII. THE RATES OF ISOLATION FROM DIFFERENT SAMPLES WERE AS FOLLOWS: 25% CATHETER, 20% URINE, 17% TRACHEA AND 15% WOUND AND BLOOD AND 23% OTHER CASES. AMONG THESE ISOLATES 94% WERE RESISTANT TO IMIPENEM AND MEROPENEM, 96% TO CIPROFLOXACIN, 85% TO TETRACYCLINE, 92% TO CEFEPIME, 88% TO CEFTAZIDIME AND 59% AMIKACIN AND 93% OF ISOLATES WERE MDR…..
