Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIM: FLUOROQUINOLONES (FQS) ARE BROAD-SPECTRUM ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS EFFECTIVE IN TREATING A WIDE RANGE OF INFECTIONS E.G. URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTIS).HOWEVER RESISTANCE HAS BEEN REPORTED WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY IN CLINICAL ISOLATES OF ESHERICHIA COLI.THIS STUDY HAS CONSIDERED TOEVALUATING RESISTANCE PATTERN TO BROAD AND EXTENDED QUINOLONES IN UROPATHOGENIC AND OTHER ISOLATES OF E.COLIWHICH WERE ISOLATED FROM DIFFERENT SAMPLES.METHODS: THE ISOLATES WERE COLLECTED FROM DIFFERENT SAMPLES WHICH REFFERED TO IMAM REZA HOSPITAL LABORATORIES BY SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLING. THESE ISOLATES WERE IDENTIFIED BY COMMON METHODS AND STORED AT -70°C IN GLYCEROL UNTIL TESTING.THE RESISTANCE PROFILES OF ISOLATES AGAINST QUINOLONES WERE EVALUATED BY DISC AGAR DIFFUSION METHOD. THE DISCS WERE PURCHASED FROM LIOFILCHEM, ITALY. E.COLI ATCC 25922 WAS USED FOR CONTROL OF STUDIED DISCS RESULTS: IN THIS STUDY, 83 ISOLATES WERE ISOLATED FROM DIFFERENT SAMPLES OF OUTPATIENTS AND INPATIENTS WHO REFFERED TO IMAM REZA HOSPITAL. SEXUAL PREVALENCE OF WOMEN WERE SIGNIFICANTLY P (0.027) HIGHER THAN MEN.MOST OF THE PATIENTS IN THE AGE GROUP 51-60 YEARS (31.3%) WAS ALLOCATED. THE MOST SAMPLES 59 CASES (71.7%) BELONGED TO URINE SAMPLES. RESISTANCE AGAINST NALIDEXIC ACID, MOXIFLOXACIN, NORFLOXACIN, GATIFLOXACIN, CIPROFLOXACIN AND OFLOAXACIN WERE 71.1%.56.6%, 60.2%, 48.2%, 60.2% AND 60.2% RESPECTIVELY. ABOUT 48.2% OF THE ISOLATES WERE RESISTANT TO SIX ANTIBIOTICS. IT MUST BE NOTED THAT 8.4% OF THE ISOLATES WERE RESISTANT TO FIVE ANTIBIOTICS…
