Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIM: THE EMERGENCE AND SPREAD OF EXTENDED SPECTRUM BETA LACTAMASE (ESBL) PRODUCING BACTERIA IS A MAJOR CLINICAL HEALTH CHALLENGE ESPECIALLY AMONG HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS. NOSOCOMIAL PNEUMONIA IS ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENT NOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS, CAUSING HIGH MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY. IN THE CURRENT STUDY, THE PREVALENCE OF NOSOCOMIAL PNEUMONIA CAUSED BY GRAM NEGATIVE STRAINS IN DIFFERENT HOSPITALS OF RASHT CITY, PROVINCE OF GUILAN, IRAN, WAS EVALUATED AND ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE PATTERNS OF THE STRAINS AS WELL AS ESBL PRODUCTION WERE STUDIED.METHODS: A TOTAL OF 48 SPECIMENS (SPUTUM AND RESPIRATORY SECRETIONS) FROM PATIENTS WERE COLLECTED AND EXAMINED FOR BACTERIAL ETIOLOGY. ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE PATTERNS OF THE BACTERIAL ISOLATES TO SELECTED ANTIBIOTICS, INCLUDING CIPROFLOXACILLIN, CEFOTAXIME, PIPERACILLIN- TAZOBACTAM, IMIPENEM, CEFEPIME, POLYMIXIN B, CHLORAMPHENICOL, AMIKACIN, CEFTAZIDIME AND TETRACYCLINE WERE DETERMINED AND ESBL POSITIVE STRAINS WERE IDENTIFIED USING COMBINED DISK AND DOUBLE DISK SYNERGY ASSAYS….
