EFFECTIVENESS OF YIELDING ADAS DAMPERS ON THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF MULTI-STORY STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALLS

Abstract

 INELASTIC DEFORMATION OF METALS HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE ONE OF THE EFFECTIVE MECHANISMS FOR THE DISSIPATION OF ENERGY INPUT TO A STRUCTURE FROM AN EARTHQUAKE. VARIOUS KINDS OF ENERGY DISSIPATION DEVICES HAVE BEEN STUDIED BY SCHOLARS, TO IDENTIFY THE EFFICIENCY OF SUCH DEVICES IN SEISMIC EXCITATIONS. AMONG THESE, ADDED DAMPING AND STIFFNESS (ADAS) DEVICES ARE OF SPECIAL INTERESTS IN IMPROVING THE SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF STEEL STRUCTURES. IN THE CURRENT STUDY, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING YIELDING ADAS DAMPERS ON THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF A MULTI-STORY STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALL BUILDING IS INVESTIGATED, AS AN INNOVATIVE METHOD OF SEISMIC STRENGTHENING. AN EXISTING NINE STORY BUILDING LOCATED IN TEHRAN WAS SELECTED FOR THE CASE STUDY, AND MACRO SCALE NUMERICAL MODELS WERE DEVELOPED TO CONDUCT THE SEISMIC ANALYSES. THE BUILDINGS WERE ASSESSED BEFORE AND AFTER USING THE ADAS DAMPERS IN DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS, TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS ON MAXIMUM DRIFTS, PERIOD OF THE STRUCTURE, MAXIMUM BASE SHEAR AND STORY FORCES. BY EVALUATION OF RESULTS FROM THE NUMERICAL TIME HISTORY ANALYSES, IT WAS FOUND THAT BY ADDING THE YIELDING ADAS DAMPERS, THE MAXIMUM STORY DRIFT RATIO CAN BE DECREASED BY 40 PERCENT. RESULTS ALSO SHOWED THAT THE PROPOSED SYSTEM PERFORMED WELL IN CONTROLLING THE MAXIMUM BASE SHEAR AND STORY FORCES.
