Abstract

CENTRAL AMYGDALA (CEA) HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN EMOTIONAL AND AVOIDANCE LEARNING. CEA NICOTINIC ACETYLCHOLINE RECEPTORS (NACHRS) ARE INVOLVED IN LEARNING AND MEMORY PROCESSES.3, 4-METHYLENEDIOXYMETHAMPHETAMINE (MDMA; ECSTASY) IS A POPULAR DRUG OF ABUSE WHICHPRODUCES EUPHORIA ANDCOGNITIVE ALTERATIONS. CONSIDERING THAT MDMA INCREASES CENTRAL ACETYLCHOLINE RELEASE, THE PRESENT STUDY EXAMINEDTHE EFFECTS OF THE BLOCKADE OF CEA NACHRS ON INTERACTIVE EFFECTS OF MORPHINE, NICOTINE AND MDMA ON MEMORY RETRIEVAL USING ASTEP-THROUGH PASSIVE AVOIDANCE TASK IN MALE WISTAR RATS. ALL ANIMALS WERE BILATERALLY IMPLANTED WITH GUIDE CANNULAS INTO THE CEA REGIONS. ANIMALS WERE ALLOWED 1 WEEK TO RECOVER FROM SURGERY…..
