EVALUATING GROUNDWATER RESOURCES AVAILABILITY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AN ARID AREA USING GROUNDWATER LEVEL TIME SERIES AND STATISTICAL TESTS

Abstract

 GROWTH IN ARID AREAS HEAVILY DEPENDS ON GROUNDWATER RESOURCES AS THEY RECEIVE LOW PRECIPITATION AND EXPERIENCE HIGH EVAPORATION RATE. IN THIS STUDY, MONTHLY GROUNDWATER LEVEL TIME SERIES OF 322 OBSERVATION WELLS IN SISTAN AND BALOUCHESTAN PROVINCE OF IRAN IN THE PERIOD OF 2002 TO 2012 WERE USED AS A MEASURE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. THE STATIONARITY OF THESE TIME SERIES WOULD GIVE SOME USEFUL INSIGHTS ABOUT HOW GROUNDWATER RESOURCES WERE EXPLOITED OVER PAST DECAY. IN THIS STUDY, ADF, KPSS AND AK TESTS OF STATIONARITY AND SEN INNOVATIVE METHOD OF TREND ANALYSIS WERE EMPLOYED. RESULTS OF STATIONARITY TESTS INDICATE HIGH NONSTATIONARITY IN 95% OF STUDIED WELLS. SEN INNOVATIVE METHOD RESULTS SUPPORT THE RESULTS COMPLETELY AS IT SHOWS SHARP AND NON-MONOTONIC TREND IN GROUNDWATER TIME SERIES. PUTTING ALL TOGETHER, THIS PAPER PROVIDES SOME STRONG EVIDENCE THAT GROUNDWATER RESOURCES OF SISTAN AND BALOUCHESTAN HAS BEEN OVEREXPLOITED. THUS, SUSTAINING CURRENT MANAGEMENT MEASURES NOT ONLY IMPACTS ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT BUT LIMITING CURRENT DEMANDS AND STARTING WATER CRISIS.
