Abstract

AMONG THE ACARI, WHICH HAVE ADAPTED TO FRESHWATER HABITATS, WATER MITES OR HYDRACHNIDIA ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL GROUP, WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN ALL TYPES OF FRESHWATERS AND THAT HAVE DEVELOPED SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS TO SUBMERSED LIFE. OUR CURRENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIVERSITY OF THE IRANIAN WATER MITE FAUNA IS ALMOST NEGLIGIBLE. THE IRANIAN WATER MITES WHICH ARE REPORTED SO FAR, INCLUDE MORE THAN 160 SPECIES, IN 40 VARIOUS GENERA AND 25 FAMILIES. THERE IS A GROWING TREND TO IDENTIFICATION OF THE IRANIAN WATER MITES AND MANY STUDIES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT DURING THE RECENT YEARS. IN THIS SURVEY, DURING THE YEARS 2008-2009, A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO IDENTIFY WATER MITES FAUNA IN GOLESTAN PROVINCE. IN THIS STUDY, 24 SPECIES BELONGING TO 11 GENUS AND 7 FAMILIES WERE DESCRIBED.
