THE PRETREATMENT OF BASIL (OCIMUM BASILICUM L.) PLANTS WITH METHYL JASMONATE ALLEVIATED DROUGHT STRESS

Abstract

 TO ELUCIDATE FURTHER THE PHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISM OF DROUGHT STRESS MITIGATION BY EXOGENOUS METHYL JASMONATE (MEJA), BASIL PLANTS WERE PRETREATED WITH 100 ΜM MEJA AND THEN WERE SUBJECTED TO THREE IRRIGATION INTERVALS (2, 4 AND 6 DAYS). RESULTS SHOWED THAT DROUGHT STRESS IMPOSED NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON PLANT GROWTH AND PRODUCTIVITY. IN DROUGHT CONDITIONS, PLANT FRESH AND DRY WEIGHT, LEAF AREA, PHOTOSYNTHETIC PIGMENTS AND RWC REDUCED BUT EL INCREASED. MEJA APPLICATION SIGNIFICANTLY CAUSED INCREASING OF PLANT TOLERANCE TO DROUGHT STRESS. MEJA PRETREATMENT AMELIORATED THE INJURY CAUSED BY DROUGHT STRESS VIA ENHANCING IN CHLOROPHYLL AND RWC AND INHIBITING INCREASES IN LEAF ELECTROLYTE LEAKAGE. IN GENERAL, RESULTS OF THIS STUDY SHOWED THAT PRETREATMENT WITH 100 MM MEJA CAN REDUCE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF WATER STRESS ON BASIL PLANTS.
