REMOVAL OF PHENOL FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS BY ACTIVATED CARBON

Abstract

 IN THIS WORK, ADSORPTION PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL ACTIVATED CARBON (CAC) ON PHENOL WAS STUDIED IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS. THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS FACTORS, SUCH AS ADSORBENT DOSAGE, INITIAL CONCENTRATION, PH AND CONTACT TIME WERE STUDIED TO IDENTIFY ADSORPTION CAPACITY OF CAC. THE PERFECT OF REMOVAL WAS OBTAINED AT 0.25 G OF CAC, 60 PPM OF PHENOL, PH=6 AND OVER THEN 10 MIN. THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA WERE ANALYZED BY LANGMUIR AND FREUNDLICH MODELS IN ORDER TO DESCRIBE THE EQUILIBRIUM ISOTHERMS. EQUILIBRIUM DATA FITTED WELL TO THE LANGMUIR MODEL WITH CORRELATION CONSTANTR 2 HIGHER THAN.0.9231 PHENOL CONCENTRATIONS WERE FOLLOWED BY UV-VIS SPECTROSCOPY. KINETIC STUDIES SHOWED THAT THE ADSORPTION KINETIC WAS OBEY PSEUDO SECOND -ORDER MODEL. THE STUDY SHOWED THAT CAC COULD BE USED AS A GOOD ADSORBENT MATERIAL FOR THE REMOVAL OF PHENOL FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION. THE EQUILIBRIUM DATA OF PHENOL ADSORPTION ON CAC WERE ANALYZED BY LANGMUIR, FREUNDLICH AND TEMPKIN ADSORPTION ISOTHERM AND LANGMUIR MODEL GAVE THE BEST CORRELATION WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA.
