Abstract

COMPLETE DEBRIDEMENT AND DISINFECTION OF THE PULPAL SPACE ARE CONSIDERED TO BE ESSENTIAL FOR PREDICTABLE LONG TERM SUCCESS IN ENDODONTIC TREATMENT. RESIDUAL PULPAL TISSUE, BACTERIA AND DENTIN DEBRIS MAY PERSIST IN THE IRREGULARITIES OF ROOT CANAL SYSTEMS, EVEN AFTER METICULOUS MECHANICAL PREPARATION. THEREFORE, SEVERAL IRRIGATING SUBSTANCES HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED FOR USE IN COMBINATION WITH CANAL PREPARATION, INCLUDING SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE (NAOCL), CHLORHEXIDINE GLUCONATE (CHX), 17% EDTA, MTAD. EACH OF THESE IRRIGANTS MIGHT HAVE SPECIAL EFFECT LIKE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTION, DISSOLVING OF PULPAL REMNANTS, SMEAR LAYER REMOVAL OR ANTIINFLAMMATORY ACTIONS. THE ROLE OF MICROORGANISMS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND PERPETUATION OF PULP AND PERIAPICAL DISEASES HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED IN ANIMAL MODELS AND HUMAN STUDIES. FOR ELIMINATION OF MICROORGANISMS FROM INFECTED ROOT CANAL SYSTEMS (BESIDE INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUES AND IRRIGATION REGIMENS) INTRA-CANAL MEDICAMENTS ARE USEFUL, TOO. THE PURPOSE OF THIS LECTURE IS TO REVIEW THE MOST USUAL INTRACANAL MEDICAMENTS IN ENDODONTIC TREATMENT CONSISTING CAOH, LEDERMIX, CHX (GEL) AND TRIPLE ANTIBIOTIC PASTE. ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES, INDICATIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS OF EACH IS REVIEWED TOO.
