Abstract

DIAGNOSIS IS AN OBJECTIVE AND INTUITIVE PROCESS THAT INVOLVES THE SYSTEMATIC USE OF INFORMATION TO DERIVE THE CAUSE OF A PROBLEM ENDURED BY A PATIENT. THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS IS COMPLEX AND THE IDENTIFICATION OF DISEASE MUST BE BASED ON KNOWLEDGE OF ITS PATHOLOGY, NATURAL HISTORY AND ITS PRESENTING FEATURES. CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS IS BASED UPON THE SYSTEMATIC GATHERING OF INFORMATION, FIRST THROUGH DIALOGUE WITH THE PATIENT AND SECOND THROUGH A PROCESS OF OBSERVATION. THE ABILITY TO GATHER ACCURATE INFORMATION THROUGH INTERVIEW IS AN ART THAT IS ACQUIRED THROUGH EXPERIENCE.TREATMENT PLANNING IS THE PLANNING OF THE MANAGEMENT OF A PATIENT’S DENTAL AND ORAL PROBLEMS IN A SYSTEMATIC AND ORDERED WAY THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PATIENT’S NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS.TREATMENT PLANNING ENCOMPASSES THE PHASES OF DEFINING THE PROBLEM, DIALOGUE WITH THE PATIENT THAT LEADS TO THE SELECTION OF THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION AND DELIVERY OF THE PLANNED TREATMENT IN AN EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT SEQUENCE. TREATMENT PLANNING CAN BE SIMPLE IN COMPLEXITY BUT CAN ALSO BE COMPLICATED AND INVOLVE MULTIDISCIPLINARY MANAGEMENT. THE AIM OF THIS LECTURE IS TO DISCUSS AN EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH TO DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLANNING IN ENDODONTICS.
