Abstract

INTRODUCTION: DRUGS OF ABUSE ARE NOW KNOWN TO PRODUCE SELECTIVE NEUROADAPTATIONS IN PARTICULAR BRAIN REGIONS. THESE NEUROADAPTATIONS ARE BEING CLOSELY EXAMINED FOR CLUES TO THE DEVELOPMENT, MAINTENANCE, AND TREATMENT OF ADDICTION. IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT CHRONIC EXPOSURE TO OPIATES AND PSYCHOSTIMULANTS DECREASES NEUROGENESIS SPECIFICALLY IN HIPPOCAMPUS. A RECENTLY APPRECIATED HIPPOCAMPAL NEUROADAPTATIONS PRODUCED BY DRUGS AS DIVERSE AS OPIATES AND PSYCHOSTIMULANTS IS DECREASED NEUROGENESIS IN THE SUBGRANULAR ZONE (SGZ). RESEARCH IS NOW FOCUSING ON IMPROVING CURRENT NEUROGENESIS TECHNIQUES INCLUDING NEURAL STEM CELL THERAPY TO AMELIORATE THESE DISORDERS. THE QUESTION OF THIS REVIEW IS HOW STEM CELLS STRATEGIES CAN PREVENT DECREASED NEUROGENESIS DURING ADDICTION?...
