Abstract

 BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: BETA-THALASSEMIA IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON GENETIC DISEASES IN IRAN THAT CURRENTLY IS PREVENTABLE WITH PREMARITAL SCREENING. PREVIOUS REPORTS SHOWED THAT FREQUENCY OF BETA-THALASSEMIA MINOR IN IRAN IS 4-10%. THIS STUDY WAS DONE TO DETERMINE THE PREVALENCE OF MINOR BETA-THALASSEMIA IN PREMARRIAGE INDIVIDUALS REFERRED TO GERASH HEALTH NETWORK IN SOUTH OF FARS PROVINCE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: THIS DESCRIPTIVE STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT ON 642 INDIVIDUALS (321 WOMEN AND 321 MEN) WHOM WERE ATTENDED THE PREMARRIAGE TEST PROGRAM IN GERASH, DURING 2013….
