Abstract

 INTRODUCTION: IN BIOTECHNOLOGY, EXTRACTION BY MEANS OF AQUEOUS BIPHASIC SYSTEMS (ABS) IS KNOWN AS A PROMISING TOOL FOR THE RECOVERY AND PURIFICATION OF BIO-MOLECULES. POLYETHYLENE GLYCOLS (PEGS) ARE A CLASS OF POLYMERS WIDELY USED IN TYPICAL POLYMER-SALT ABSS FOR THE SEPARATION AND PURIFICATION OF VITAL BIOMOLECULES DUE TO THEIR HIGH BIODEGRADABILITY AND LOW COST. HOWEVER, THE HYDROPHILIC NATURE OF PEGS LIMITS THE APPLICABILITY OF THIS TECHNIQUE, SPECIALLY, WHEN THE GOAL IS TO EXTRACT HYDROPHOBIC BIOMOLECULES.TO OVERCOME THIS LIMITATION, IN RECENT YEARS, IONIC LIQUIDS (ILS) HAVE BEEN USED BY SOME RESEARCHERS [1]. IN THIS RESPECT, THIS WORK IS DEVOTED TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF IL, 1-BUTYL-3-METHYLIMIDAZOLIUM BROMIDE [C4MIM] BR, ON THE TWO-PHASE EQUILIBRIUM BEHAVIOR OF {PEG 400+ K3CITRATE} ABS, AND ITS EXTRACTION CAPABILITY. FOR THIS PURPOSE, THE PHASE DIAGRAMS FOR {PEG 400+ K3CITRATE} ABS IN THE PRESENCE OF SMALL QUANTITIES OF [C4MIM] BR AT T=298.15 K WERE DETERMINED.IN ADDITION, THE PARTITION COEFFICIENTS OF L-TRYPTOPHAN (K TRP), AS A MODEL BIO-MOLECULE, WERE DETERMINED IN THE STUDIED SYSTEM AT T=298.15 K. INFLUENCE OF INORGANIC SALT CONCENTRATION WAS ALSO DISCUSSED THROUGHOUT THE PARTITION COEFFICIENTS OBTAINED.
