Abstract

 INTRODUCTION: CALIXARENES ARE CYCLIC OLIGOMERS OBTAINED BY THE CONDENSATION OF FORMALDEHYDE WITHP -ALKYLPHENOLS IN A BASIC ENVIRONMENT. IN THE LAST TWO DECADES, THE MOLECULAR RECOGNITION AND ASSEMBLY OF CALIXARENES HAS ATTRACTED A LOT OF ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THEIR POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS IN VAIOUS FIELDS, SUCH AS ANALYSIS AND SEPARATION, MATERIAL SCIENCE, ENZYME-MIMETIC SYSTEMS, SELF-ASSEMBLING MEMBRANES ETC. THE CONTROL OF THE CATION-BINDING ABILITY OF CALIXARENES HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MORE RECENT INVESTIGATION [1]. IN THIS WORK, THE FORMATION CONSTANTS OF THE ALKALI AND ALKALI EARTH CATION COMPLEXES WITH THE LIGANDS ARE DETERMINED IN A METHANOL-CHLOROFORM MIXTURE (30/70 BY VOLUME) AT 25OC USING A SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC TECHNIQUE. THE SELECTIVITY OF THE ALKALI AND ALKALI EARTH CATIONS TOWARDS THE LIGANDS IS SPECIFIED AND DISCUSSED.
