Abstract

 INTRODUCTION: IN THE 21ST CENTURY, THE RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF ‘‘GREEN’’ OR ‘‘ECO-FRIENDLY’’ CORROSION INHIBITORS HAS BEEN ADDRESSED TOWARD THE GOAL OF USING CHEAP, EFFECTIVE COMPOUNDS AT LOW OR ‘‘ZERO’’ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT [1]. SOME INVESTIGATIONS HAVE IN RECENT TIME BEEN MADE INTO THE CORROSION INHIBITING PROPERTIES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS OF PLANT ORIGIN, WHICH HAVE BEEN FOUND TO GENERALLY EXHIBIT GOOD INHIBITION EFFICIENCIES [2, 3]. THE PRESENT STUDY IS AN ATTEMPT TO FIND A CHEAP AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE INHIBITOR FOR MILD STEEL CORROSION IN THE ACIDIC SOLUTION I.E. H2SO4, WHERE THE EXTRACT OF THE AERIAL PARTS OF STACHYS LAVANDULIFOLIA IS TESTED. THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF THIS EXTRACT WERE GERMACRENE-D, B-PHELLANDRENE, B -PINENE, MYRCENE, A- PINENE AND Z- B -OCIMENE. WEIGHT LOSS MEASUREMENTS, POTENTIODYNAMIC POLARIZATION AND ELECTROCHEMICAL IMPEDANCE SPECTROSCOPY ARE USED IN THE PRESENT WORK TO CALCULATE THE INHIBITION EFFICIENCY OF THESTACHYS LAVANDULIFOLIA EXTRACT. THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE CORROSION REACTION RATE IN FREE AND INHIBITED ACID SOLUTIONS WAS INTERPRETED BY MEANS OF THE LANGMUIR ISOTHERM ADSORPTION. THE ACTIVATION ENERGY OF CORROSION REACTION WITHOUT AND WITH INHIBITORS WAS THEN CALCULATED. TO EXPLAIN THE ADSORPTIVE BEHAVIOR OF THE MOLECULES ON THE MILD STEEL SURFACE, QUANTUM CHEMICAL CALCULATIONS WAS UNDERTAKEN.
