PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF A NEW ZEOLITE BASED CATALYST FOR METHANOL ELECTROOXIDATION

Abstract

 INTRODUCTION: METHANOL IS USED AS FUEL IN DIRECT METHANOL FUEL CELLS. DIRECT OXIDATION OF METHANOL ENCOUNTERS LARGE OVERVOLTAGES AT MOST UNMODIFIED ELECTRODE SURFACES.THEREFORE, IT IS VERY INTERESTING TO DEVELOP NEW CATALYSTS TO DECREASE THIS LARGE OVERVOLTAGE BY ELECTROCATALYTIC OXIDATION OF METHANOL. EFFECTIVE CATALYSTS CAN BE PRODUCED BY INCORPORATION OF TRANSITION-METAL IONS SUCH AS FE2+ [1] AND NI2+ [2] INTO THE PORES OF ZEOLITES. IN THIS RESEARCH, ANALCIME ZEOLITE (ANA) WAS SYNTHESIZED BY HYDROTHERMAL APPROACH AND WAS CHARACTERIZED USING XRD TECHNIQUE. NI (II) IONS WERE INCORPORATED INTO THE ZEOLITE PORES VIA ION EXCHANGE PROCESS. THE RESULTING MODIFIER (NI/ANA) WAS USED FOR MODIFICATION OF CARBON PASTE ELECTRODE (CPE). THE ELECTROCATALYTIC OXIDATION OF METHANOL WAS STUDIED ON THE MODIFIED ELECTRODE (NI/ANACPE).
