Abstract

 THE FIELD OF POLYOXOMETALATES (POMS) IS AN OLD ONE, WHICH HAS RECEIVED TREMENDOUS IMPETUS FROM THE INCISIVE REVIEW BY POPE AND MULLER IN 1991 AND HAS ACCORDINGLY WITNESSED CONSIDERABLE PROGRESS IN THE LAST TWO DECADES [1]. POLYOXOMETALATES ARE EXCELLENT ACID AND OXIDATION CATALYSTS AS WELL AS EFFECTIVE PHOTO CATALYSTS, WHOSE PHOTOCHEMICAL ACTIVITIES ORIGINATE FROM THEIR UNIQUE STRUCTURES. POMS ANIONS WERE GOOD MULTIELECTRON ACCEPTORS, AND SOME SATURATED KEGGIN-TYPE CLUSTERS SUCH AS PW12O403- AND SIW12O40 4- SHOWED SATISFACTORY PHOTO ACTIVITIES IN HOMOGENOUS PHASE SYSTEMS [2]. UP TO NOW, TWO GREEN PHOTO CATALYSTS INCLUDING TIO2 AND POLYOXOMETALATES (POMS) HAVE BEEN WIDELY USED [3].A GENERAL PHOTO CATALYTIC METHOD WAS CARRIED OUT AS FOLLOWING: 20 MG OF PW12O40 3- CATALYST WAS DISSOLVED IN 20ML OF FRESH AQUEOUS, DYE SOLUTION. THE SOLUTION WAS STIRRED IN THE DARK FOR 30 MIN TO OBTAIN A GOOD DISPERSION AND ADSORPTION. THE LAMP WAS INSERTED AROUND THE SUSPENSION AFTER ITS INTENSITY BECAME STABLE. PHOTO DEGRADATION OF DYE WAS CARRIED OUT AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE IN THE BATCH PHOTO REACTOR. THE PHOTOLYTE WAS ANALYZED BY UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETER AT LMAX FOR EACH DYE.VARIOUS DYES, SUCH AS: METHYL ORANGE, LITMUS ORANGE 201, YELLOW 12 AND YELLOW 4GL DEGRADED COMPLETELY AND THE OTHER DYES SUCH AS METHYLEN BLUE, BASIC BLUE 228, BLUE AC, RED AC DEGRADED GREATLY.
