Abstract

 THE CONTAMINATION OF WATER BODIES BY TOXIC HEAVY METALS SUCH AS LEAD IS A WORLDWIDE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM, DUE TO THE RAPID INCREASE IN INDUSTRIAL AND MINING ACTIVITIES THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SIGNIFICANT METAL CONCENTRATION IN SURFACE AND GROUND WATERS. THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) HAS ESTABLISHED THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE LIMIT OF 10 MG.L-1 FOR LEAD IN DRINKING WATER [1]. THEREFORE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF FAST, SENSITIVE AND RELIABLE ANALYTICAL METHODS TO ASSESS LEAD IN ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES IS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC [2]. THE AIM OF THE PRESENT WORK IS THE ASSESSMENT OF A NEW SORBENT, USING THE NOVEL SYNTHESIZED LIGAND (SCHEME 1) THAT COATED BY ALUMINA-SODIUM DODECYL SULFATE (SDS) FOR THE EXTRACTION AND PRECONCENTRATION OF LEAD FROM AQUEOUS SAMPLES PRIOR TO DETERMINATION BY FLAM ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY. THE MAIN FACTORS SUCH AS PH, AMOUNT SORBENT, SAMPLE AND ELUENT FLOW RATE, TYPE AND VOLUME OF ELUTION SOLUTION AND INTERFERING IONS INCLUDING CU (II), CD (II), AG (I), NI (II), ZN (II) ON THE SORPTION OF LEAD IONS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL. AT THE OPTIMIZED CONDITIONS, LEAD IONS CAN BE EXTRACTED BY EFFICIENCY OF ˃ %95.
