Abstract

 LEATHER INDUSTRY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST INDUSTRIES IN TABRIZ. IT IS TYPICALLY CHARACTERIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST POLLUTANTS GENERATED INDUSTRIES WHICH PRODUCE WIDE VARIETIES OF HIGH STRENGTH TOXIC CHEMICALS[1].CHROMIUM HAS BEEN THE DOMINANT TANNING AGENT FOR THE BETTER PART OF THE CENTURY, AND NOW ACCOUNTS FOR APPROXIMATELY 85% OF LEATHERS PRODUCED GLOBALLY. THIS IS LARGELY DUE TO ITS ABILITY TO IMPART HIGH STRENGTH AND COMFORT PROPERTIES COMPARED TO OTHER TANNING SYSTEMS. AN EXTENSIVE WORLDWIDE RESEARCH HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON ALTERNATIVE TANNAGES, BUT NO SATISFACTORY REPLACEMENT FOR CHROMIUM HAS EMERGED UNTIL NOW[2].THEREFORE, TANNERY WASTEWATERS CONSTITUTE SUBSTANTIAL CHROMIUM WHICH CAN CAUSE SEVERE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS. SO, ELIMINATION OR MINIMIZATION OF CHROMIUM FROM WASTEWATERS IS CURRENTLY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES [3]. IN THIS RESEARCH, REMOVAL AND RECYCLING OF CHROMIUM FROM WASTEWATERS OF LEATHER TANNERY INDUSTRIES IN CHARMSHAHR ZONE OF TABRIZ BY OPTIMIZING OF PH WAS INVESTIGATED. THE AVERAGE VALUES OF THE COMPOSITION OF LEATHER TANNERY WASTEWATER ARE PRESENTED BELOW.
