DYE-SENSITIZED SOLAR CELLS USING MICROALGAL CHLOROPHYLL

Abstract

 CHLOROPHYLL IS A GREEN PIGMENT WHICH ALLOWS PLANTS TO ABSORB ENERGY FROM LIGHT AND USES ITS ENERGY TO SYNTHESISE CARBOHYDRATES FROM CO2 AND WATER. MICROALGAE IS A MICROORGANISMS WHICH CONTAIN HIGH AMOUNTS OF CHLOROPHYLL. USES CHLOROPHYLL IN DYES IS A NEW METHOD THAT APPLY CHLOROPHYLL AS PHOTORECEPTORS. MICROALGAL CHLOROPHYLL WAS EXTRACTED BY DMF, METHANOL, ACETONE AND ETHANOL. WE STUDIED THE EXTRACTS IN COMBINATION WITH WIDE GAP SEMICONDUCTOR TIO2 FOR THEIR SUITABILITY AS EFFICIENT LIGHT HARVESTER IN SOLAR CELL. A SOLAR CELL, BASED ON CHLOROPHYLL IMMOBILIZED ON NANOCRYSTALLINE TIO2 FILM WAS SUCCESSFULLY CONSTRUCTED. THE PHOTOCURRENT DENSITY–PHOTO VOLTAGE (J–V) CHARACTERISTICS OF DYESENSITIZED SOLAR CELL (DSSC), BASED ON CHLOROPHYLL ADSORBED ON NANOCRYSTALLINE TIO2 FILM ELECTRODE WERE MEASURED. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE CHLOROPHYLL EXTRACTED BY DMF DISPLAYS BETTER PHOTOELECTRIC PERFORMANCE COMPARED TO THE CHLOROPHYLS EXTRACTED BY METHANOL, ETHANOL AND ACETONE, GIVING A SHORTCIRCUIT PHOTOCURRENT DENSITY (JSC) OF 0.075 MA/CM2 AND THE OPEN-CIRCUIT PHOTOVOLTAGE (VOC) 0.45 V, UNDER AN ILLUMINATION INTENSITY OF 40 MW/CM2.
