Abstract

 IN ORDER TO PRODUCE MODIFIED POLY(LACTIC ACID) (PLA) FOR APPLICATIONS REQUIRING HIGH MELT VISCOSITY AND ELASTICITY (E.G., LOW-DENSITY FOAMING, THERMOFORMING), THE NEAT PLA HAS BEEN REACTIVELY MODIFIED IN MELT BY ADDING EPOXIDIZED SOYBEAN OIL AS LOW-MOLECULAR-WEIGHT CHAIN EXTENDER. VARIOUS SAMPLES INCLUDING DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SOYBEAN OIL WERE OBTAINED. THEY WERE THEN STRUCTURALLY CHARACTERIZED BY FTIR SPECTROSCOPY AND MOLECULAR STRUCTURE ANALYSIS. THEIR RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES WERE INVESTIGATED AND COMPARED WITH NEAT PLA. SAMPLES CONTAINING 1 AND 3 WT% SOYBEAN OIL SHOWED IMPROVED RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR.
