Abstract

 MODELING OF PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION IN EMULSION POLYMERIZATION IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE IN TERMS OF APPLICATION AND MECHANISTIC STUDIES. DYNAMIC EVOLUTION OF PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION IS DESCRIBED BY A SET OF POPULATION BALANCE EQUATIONS WHICH INVOLVED VARIOUS PHENOMENA SUCH AS NUCLEATION, GROWTH, AND COAGULATION. IN THIS STUDY, A MECHANISTIC MODEL BASED ON POPULATION BALANCE EQUATIONS IS DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO ESTIMATE THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONIN IN EMULSION POLYMERIZATION OF BUTYL ACRYALTE. IN THIS MODEL, THE FINITE VOLUME METHOD IS USED FOR DISCRETIZING THE POPULATION BALANCE EQUATIONS. THE SIMULATION RESULTS SHOWE THAT THE SURFACTANT CONCENTRATION, HAS A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON AVERAGE FINAL PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND CONVERSION RATE RESPECTIVELY.
