Abstract

 IN THIS RESEARCH, A SAMPLE POLYURETHANE/NANOCLAY WITH IMPROVED MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS WAS PREPARED.THE OBJECT OF THIS STUDY, WAE FORMULATING THE POLYURETHANE COATING SIMILAR TO THAT OF POLYMER COATINGS SUITABLE FOR THE GRAVURE PRINTING (EITHER LASER OR MECHANICAL ENGRAVING). THE POLYURETHANE/NANOCLAY NANOCOMPOSITE WAS FABRICATED BY USING THE PREPOLYMERIZATION METHOD. MDI-BASED POLYURETHANE PREPOLYMER WAS UTILIZED AS A POLYMER MATRIX AND CHAIN EXTENDER WAS USED AS DISPERSION MEDIA OF NANOCLAY. THE EFFECT OF INCREASING NANOCLAY WEIGHT PERCENTAGE ON MECHANICAL AND THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NANOCOMPOSITES WAS STUDIED. BY ADDING 6WT.% NANOCLAY TO POLYURETHANE MATRIX, A 62% INCREASE IN FLEXURAL MODULUS WAS ACHIEVED. A 25.4% INCREASE IN TENSILE STRENGTH AND A 4-FOLD INCREASE IN ELONGATION AT BREAK WAS OBTAINED BY ADDING 4 WT.% OF NANOCLAY. THE PROPERTY OF THE SAMPLE CONTAINING 4 WT.% OF NANOCLAY IS NEAREST TO THOSE OF POLYMER COATINGS SUITABLE FOR THE GRAVURE PRINTING APPLICATIONS.
