Abstract

 IN THE PRESENT STUDY THE MODIFIED LUDZACK-ETTINGER PREDENITRIFICATION PROCESS WAS EMPLOYED FOR THE BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF OIL REFINERY WASTEWATER. FOR THIS PURPOSE AN ANOXIC TANK COUPLED TO AN OXIC MBR OPERATED AT SRT AND HRT OF 60 DAYS AND 24HR, RESPECTIVELY WAS USED. THE FINDINGS OF THE PRESENT STUDY SHOWED THAT USING A RECYLCLE RATIO (R) EQUAL TO BOTH 2 AND 4, COD AND PHENOL REMOVAL EFFICINCY HIGHER THAN 90%, 99%, RESPECTIVELY AND CYANIDE AND AMMONIA REMOVAL EFFICIENCY OF ALMOST 100% WERE ACHIEVED. HOWEVER, DUE TO ACCUMULATION OF NITRATE, TOTAL NITROGEN (TN) REMOVAL WAS NOT COMPLETE BUT INCREASE IN R FROM 2 TO 4 RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN TN REMOVAL EFFICIENCY.
