Abstract

 GRAFTING OF STYRENE ONTO POLYBUTADIENE WAS PREPARED BY SEEDED EMULSION POLYMERIZATION USING CUMENE HYDROPEROXIDE AS AN INITIATOR. THE EFFECTS OF INITIATOR CONCENTRATION, REACTION TEMPERATURE, AND EMULSIFIER CONCENTRATION ON MONOMER CONVERSION AND THE GRAFTING PROPERTIES OF RUBBER ARE INVESTIGATED. A HIGH GRAFTING YIELD IS OBTAINED AT A TEMPERATURE OF 70C, EMULSIFIER CONCENTRATION 1.5 PARTS BY WEIGHT AND INITIATOR CONCENTRATION OF 0.8 PARTS BY WEIGHT. THESE GRAFT POLYMERS WERE BLENDED WITH PS AND HIPS FOR PRODUCING OF SUPER HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE. THE EFFECT OF BLEND COMPOSITION ON TENSILE STRENGTH, IMPACT STRENGTH, ELONGATION AND VICAT IS INVESTIGATED. THE GRAFTED RUBBER IMPROVES THE IMPACT TOUGHNESS OF PS POLYMER.BY USEING LAB SCALE RESULTS, SYNTHESIS OF PS-GRAFT-PBL WAS CARRIED OUT IN INDUSTERIAL REACTOR.
