Abstract

 NOWADAYS, OILY BILGE WATER IS ONE OF THE MAJOR POLLUTANTS THAT THREATS MARINE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSEOF THE DIRECT DISCHARGE OF IT FROM SHIPS INTO SEA. AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS PERFORMED TO MAINTAIN THE FEASIBILITY OF USING HYBRID UPFLOW ANAEROBIC SLUDGE BLANKET (HUASB) BIO-REACTOR FOR TREATING DILUTE BILGE WATER AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE.DURING THE OPERATION, THE OLR (ORGANIC LOADING RATE) WAS GRADUALLY INCREASED FROM 0.12 TO 0.6 G COD/L.DAY. THE REACTOR WAS OPERATED AT TWO DIFFERENT HRTS (HYDRAULIC RETENTION TIME) OF 10 AND 8 HOURS DURING THE OPERATION. AT THE END OF THE OPERATION, THE COD (CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND) REMOVAL EFFICIENCY AND BIOGAS PRODUCTION RATE OF 75%AND 0.93 L/DAY WAS ACHIEVED, RESPECTIVELY. HENCE, THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THIS KIND OF LOW INVESTMENT TREATMENT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN TREATING DILUTE BILGE WATER.
