Abstract

 ACCURATE ASPHALTENE DEPOSITION PREDICTION IN VERTICAL OIL WELLS IS ONE OF THE CHALLENGING ISSUES OF OIL PRODUCTION THAT REQUIRES AN ACCURATE PREDICTIVE MODELING. FOR A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE FLOW PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTENE CONTAINING CRUDE OILS, IT IS NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND HOW ASPHALTENE AFFECT THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON SUCH RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF OIL-ASPHALTENE SLURRY SYSTEMS. TWO IRANIAN CRUDE OILS FROM TWO DIFFERENT OIL FIELDS, NOROWZ AND FOROOZAN, WERE CHOSEN AND USED IN THIS WORK. ASPHALTENE SOLID PARTICLES WERE EXTRACTED FROM THE CRUDE OILS USING IP-143 METHOD. THEN, THE EXTRACTED ASPHALTENE WAS DISPERSED IN ORIGINAL FRESH OIL FOR PREPARING SLURRY SAMPLES WITH DIFFERENT ASPHALTENE CONCENTRATIONS. THE PREPARED SLURRY SAMPLES HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND SHEAR RATES UP TO 100 S-1 USING A PARALLEL PLATE RHEOMETER. THE RESULTS OF RHEOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS SHOWED THAT FOR BOTH CHOSEN CRUDE OILS, THE NON-NEWTONIAN FLOW CURVES CAN BE APPROXIMATED BY THE BINGHAM-PLASTIC MODEL TO DETERMINE THE APPARENT VISCOSITY AND THE YIELD STRESS AS FUNCTIONS OF THE ASPHALTENE CONCENTRATION AND THE TEMPERATURE. AN EXPLANATION IS ALSO PROVIDED FOR THE OBSERVED TRENDS OF THE APPARENT VISCOSITY AS WELL AS THE YIELD STRESS VERSUS BOTH TEMPERATURE AND ASPHALTENE CONCENTRATION. THE RESULTS OF THIS WORK CAN BE USED FOR ACCURATE CFD SIMULATION OF ASPHALTENE DEPOSITION IN VERTICAL WELLS DURING OIL PRODUCTION.
