Abstract

 IN THIS PAPER, THE EFFECT OF ORGANOCLAY ON TENSILE PROPERTIES OF TWO EPOXY MATRICES WAS INVESTIGATED EXPERIMENTALLY. THE EPOXY/CLAY NANOCOMPOSITES WERE PREPARED WITH THE ORGANOCLAY CLOISITE 30B AND TWO DIFFERENT HARDENERS, TETA AND F205. THE CLOISITE 30B WAS DISPERSED INTO THE EPOXY SYSTEMS IN 0%, 1.5%, 3% AND 5% RATIO IN WEIGHT RESPECT TO THE MATRICES. THE TENSILE PROPERTIES OF THE EPOXY/CLAY NANOCOMPOSITES SUCH AS TENSILE MODULUS, TENSILE STRENGTH, STRAIN AT BREAK AND ENERGY TO BREAK (TOUGHNESS) ARE MEASURED THROUGH TENSILE TEST ACCORDING TO ASTM STANDARD D638-03. IT IS FOUND THAT THE TENSILE MODULUS INCREASES WITH THE ADDITION OF THE CLAY LOADING FOR BOTH THE EPOXY RESIN SYSTEMS, HOWEVER THE STRENGTH, STRAIN AT BREAK AND ENERGY TO BREAK INCREASE FOR THE F205-CURED NANOCOMPOSITES AND DECREASE FOR THE TETA-CURED NANOCOMPOSITES. IT IS ALSO OBTAINED THAT ADDING CLAY INTO THE EPOXY MATRICES MAKES THE TETA-CURED NANOCOMPOSITES MORE BRITTLE AND THE OTHERS CURED WITH F205 MORE SOFTEN.
